Rolls-Royce Firmament Concept Turns the Hood Into a Meteor Shower Chasing the Spirit of Ecstasy

Every shooting star you have ever wished on was actually dying. What looks like a streak of pure light tearing across the sky is a rock disintegrating, burning up in its final seconds, and yet we treat that death as a gift, a wish granted. Stars carry the same contradiction. The calcium in your bones and the iron in your blood were forged inside a star that had to die violently to scatter those elements across the universe. Creation and destruction run on the same fuel line, not as metaphor but as literal astrophysics. French design student Gaspard Deveugle built an entire Rolls-Royce concept around that exact paradox.

Called Firmament, the concept deletes the vertical Pantheon grille that has anchored every Rolls-Royce face for a century. A low, pointed nose takes its place, tapering to a blade like a ship’s hull. Streaks of light rain across the hood and glass roof, dense near the windshield and scattering into faint dust toward the tip, the way a meteor burns brightest right before it disappears. The pattern converges on the Spirit of Ecstasy, as if she is the one point catching everything falling from the sky. It is the loudest thing on the car, and everything else has been quieted to let it read clearly.

Deveugle is a 3D design student based in Valenciennes, France, with internship experience across BMW, Kingfisher, and RealNum, and Firmament sits inside a portfolio built almost entirely on reinterpreting storied marques. He has rendered a Bentley Speed 8 tribute, sketched a Bugatti Type 52, built cafe racer studies off Harley Davidson and Moto Guzzi platforms, and designed a yacht concept called Arcane. Firmament arrives as an internship project rather than a factory commission, posted on Behance alongside a companion breakdown of the sketch and modeling process behind it. That distinction matters here. Nobody at Goodwood signed off on deleting the grille, which frees the concept to treat Rolls-Royce’s most sacred design element as raw material rather than untouchable heritage.

Rolls-Royce has already flirted with turning night sky into physical form, just never on the outside of the car. The Ghost introduced its fiber-optic Starlight headliner in 2014, a swath of black leather stitched with over a thousand tiny points of light, and Spectre pushed that further with more than five thousand illuminated points woven into the dashboard fascia. Both live entirely inside the cabin, visible only to whoever paid for the seat. Firmament takes that same instinct and turns it inside out, moving the starfield from the headliner to the hood where anyone on the street can see it. That single move reframes a private luxury detail as the entire visual identity of the car.

The mood board Deveugle built around the idea, titled Power of Duality, leans on real astrophysics rather than loose poetry. Stars manufacture heavy elements inside their cores through nucleosynthesis, then have to die violently to scatter that material across the universe, meaning creation and destruction share the same fuel line by necessity, not metaphor. His reference imagery pairs a comet’s frozen tail with a supernova’s radial burst and a single meteor reflected over open water, the visual grammar he then translated onto sheet metal. That grounding shows in how the streak pattern behaves on the car itself. It thickens where energy would concentrate and thins where it would dissipate, following a logic borrowed from physics rather than instinct.

The rest of the surfacing supports that reading without competing for attention. A raised black spine splits the rear deck into twin fenders that taper to points, a quiet nod to Rolls-Royce’s own boat-tail coachbuilding, though it plays a supporting role here rather than the headline. Dark, turbine bladed wheels replace the static hubcaps Rolls-Royce is known for, hardware that stays upright on its axle no matter how fast the wheel spins, trading serenity for something closer to a hypercar’s stance. There are no visible door handles or shutlines anywhere in the renders, just one continuous poured surface running from nose to tail. Every panel gap that would normally interrupt a Rolls-Royce silhouette has been resolved into a single, unbroken skin.

None of this is destined for Goodwood’s production line, and that is fine. Firmament works precisely because it is unburdened by the things a real Rolls-Royce has to solve, crash structures, pedestrian safety, a grille that still needs to cool something even on an EV. What it offers instead is a sharp piece of brand thinking from a student still building his portfolio, taking a hundred-year-old grille and a hood ornament everyone stopped truly looking at and making both feel dangerous again. Rolls-Royce spends real engineering effort making its cars feel weightless and silent. Deveugle’s answer is to make one look like it just survived a meteor storm, closer to what the Spirit of Ecstasy was always chasing.

“Adaptive Reuse” Housing in NYC Reshapes Aging Brick Superblock Into An Interconnected Society

Cities have gotten very good at stacking people on top of each other and very bad at getting those people to actually interact. High density housing solves a real estate problem while quietly creating a social one, isolating seniors on one floor and young families on another with nothing but an elevator connecting them. Architect Yi Lu looked at this fragmentation and asked what it would take to reverse it without bulldozing the buildings already holding millions of people. Her answer, submitted to the A’ Design Award, treats an aging superblock not as a liability but as raw material for a new kind of social infrastructure. It is ambitious, a little sculptural, and grounded in something most housing renewal proposals ignore entirely.

The project, titled The Intergenerational Commons, targets Stuyvesant Town, New York City’s massive postwar housing development, as its test case. Lu’s proposal keeps roughly 75 to 85 percent of the existing floor area as housing while converting the rest into a revitalized podium, rooftop kindergartens, and a network of terraces threading through the brick shell. The renderings have a strange, compelling silhouette to them, cylindrical brick towers twisting up past staggered floor plates, like Michel de Klerk got handed Frank Gehry’s sketchbook. A horizontal community spine activates street level life, while stairs, lifts, and terraces stitch the floors together into what Lu describes as a continuous social landscape. The result looks sculptural from the outside and feels intentional from within, which is a harder balance to strike than either quality on its own.

Stuyvesant Town was built as postwar efficiency housing, rows of near identical brick towers designed to move people through the city’s housing shortage as fast as possible. That efficiency came at the cost of any real social texture, and decades later the superblock reads as functional but flat, a place people live rather than a place people encounter each other. Lu’s retrofit does not fight that brick language so much as bend it, pulling curved, tower-like volumes out of the existing grid and letting them collide at odd angles. Load-bearing steel reinforcement and reversible insertions allow the new geometry to sit on top of the old structure without gutting it. The brick stays, but its logic changes completely, from repetition to rupture.

A standardized kit of parts, built around 3,600 millimeter modular bays and lightweight steel framing, lets construction happen in phases without displacing current residents, a constraint that kills most ambitious renewal proposals before they leave the page. Bolt on terraces extend outward from the existing brick shell, adding outdoor space that the original superblock never had. A 1,200 square meter community hub anchors street level activity, while stacked shared terraces and a 300 millimeter green roof system carry that social infrastructure upward through the building. None of it requires the wholesale demolition that usually accompanies large scale housing renewal.

The interesting part is how Lu orchestrates ‘intergenerational’ overlapping zones, connecting seniors and children rather than the more common strategy of designating separate zones for each. Rooftop kindergartens sit close enough to senior learning spaces on the revitalized podium that informal encounters happen without anyone having to schedule them. Interaction stays optional throughout, preserving privacy for residents who want it while making mutual support available for those who do not. That flexibility separates the proposal from the well-meaning but rigid intergenerational housing models that came before it. Whether a project this structurally ambitious ever gets built at Stuyvesant Town is a separate question from whether it should, and Lu’s entry makes a genuinely compelling case for the second one.

Gage Roads Just Turned a Surfboard Into a Beer Tap

The last debate you expected to find at the heart of a design story was a surfing one, but here we are. For years, the surf community has been at odds over something surprisingly technical: should surfboards be measured in volume, using litres? It sounds like a niche argument, but for shapers and surfers, the stakes are genuinely real. Leave it to an Australian brewery to turn that argument into one of the most interesting design objects of the year.

Gage Roads Brew Co. partnered with legendary board shaper Chris Garrett of Phantom Surfboards to create the Beerboard, a custom single-fin surfboard built with a sealed internal chamber capable of holding 10 litres of Gage Roads Summer Ale Single Fin. Yes, it actually surfs. And yes, it actually pours beer. That’s the whole glorious point.

The concept itself is brilliantly simple, but the execution was anything but. The engineering challenge of making a surfboard capable of storing pressurised beer without leaking, or worse, imploding mid-session, required serious work. Garrett’s decades of experience as a shaper came into play here in ways that go well beyond surface aesthetics. He’s been crafting boards since 1979, and Phantom Surfboards has been his life’s work since 1984. Designing the Beerboard meant rethinking the interior construction entirely, embedding a food-safe chamber that could handle pressurisation while preserving the board’s hydrodynamics. The build process reportedly came with a few explosions along the way, which is either alarming or just the most Australian development story imaginable.

The board draws inspiration from the iconic Greenough Spoon, a shape dating back to the 1960s. Choosing that reference wasn’t accidental. The Spoon was itself a radical rethink of what a surfboard could be, and the Beerboard follows directly in that spirit. It doesn’t look like a novelty item. It looks like a real board, clean and purposeful, and that restraint is exactly where the design succeeds. A gimmick slapped together for a social media moment would have felt cheap. This doesn’t feel cheap at all.

Once the board was finished, Gage Roads called in Olympic surfing medalist and part-owner Jack Robinson alongside legendary free surfer Brendan “Margo” Margieson for sea trials. The fact that professional surfers actually took it into the ocean, rode it, and then presumably poured a cold one from it afterward is a key part of why the Beerboard registers as more than a marketing stunt. It works, both as a surfboard and as a beer dispenser. That functional integrity is what elevates the whole project.

Is the Beerboard a practical product? Not remotely. You’re not about to wax this thing down and paddle out for your morning session while worrying about keeping your lager cold. But practicality is the wrong lens here entirely. The most interesting design objects rarely exist to solve a purely utilitarian problem. They exist to reframe one. The Beerboard reframes the entire surfboard volume debate by making it physical and playful, by literally filling a surfboard with the very unit of measurement causing all the fuss. It’s design as commentary, and it genuinely lands.

It also matters who made this. Chris Garrett isn’t an ad agency prop designer. He’s a craftsman with nearly 50 years in the industry, someone whose boards have been trusted by some of the world’s top surfers across decades. Bringing his expertise to a project like this gives the Beerboard a credibility it wouldn’t have had otherwise. It’s the difference between a concept and a creation.

I’ve seen plenty of branded design collaborations that felt hollow or performative, where the “design” was really just a logo slapped on a limited-edition container. The Beerboard isn’t that. It required genuine engineering, real craft expertise, and the confidence to commit fully to a ridiculous idea until it became a remarkable one. That, I think, is what good design actually looks like. Sometimes it just happens to come with a tap.

A 35m² Summerhouse Designed Like a Space Habitat

Most summerhouses don’t start as thought experiments about the moon. EcoNeo did. Designed by SAGA Space Architects and sitting quietly in Asnæs on the Danish island of Zealand, it measures just 35 square meters and sleeps a family of six. It also has an indoor sauna. The fact that all of this coexists within a space roughly the size of a large studio apartment says everything about what SAGA is doing differently. This is a house designed by people who take small spaces very, very seriously.

SAGA Space Architects was founded in 2018 by Danish architects Sebastian Aristotelis and Karl-Johan Sørensen, and their portfolio reads nothing like a traditional residential practice. These are the people behind LUNARK, a simulated lunar habitat tested during a 100-day expedition in Greenland. They also developed the Circadian Light system installed on the International Space Station and built FLEXHab, a habitat prototype for the European Space Agency. Their methodology is built around extreme-environment logic, where every centimeter, every kilogram, and every watt is a decision that matters. EcoNeo takes that same discipline and applies it to a Danish holiday home, and the result is genuinely worth paying attention to.

The studio calls its approach “Terra-Tech,” a marriage of technical precision and material awareness that keeps the design grounded in lived experience rather than spectacle. EcoNeo is built from biogenic materials, including OSB panels, wood-fiber insulation, Douglas fir, oak, birch, and plywood, all chosen for their low environmental footprint and warm sensory quality. Digital fabrication shapes the structure with the kind of accuracy you don’t typically associate with a weekend retreat. The architects estimate EcoNeo reduces annual carbon emissions by roughly 80 percent compared to an average new Danish summerhouse. That is not a rounding error. That is a structural rethinking of what holiday architecture can be.

On the inside, the floor plan is organized around a central living space that works harder than most rooms twice its size. The ground floor brings together the kitchen, bathroom, integrated storage, the sauna, and a dining table that can seat the whole family. Upstairs, sleeping space is tucked in a way that feels considered rather than compromised. Every piece of the interior is designed to serve more than one purpose, because SAGA knows from its space habitat work that generosity of experience does not require generosity of space. You feel that difference the moment you look at the photographs. The rooms have a quietness to them, a sense that everything belongs exactly where it is.

That, to me, is where EcoNeo gets genuinely interesting as a cultural object. The conversation around sustainable housing often leans into austerity, as though living with a lighter footprint requires accepting a diminished quality of life. EcoNeo makes the opposite argument without raising its voice. The house does not look like a sacrifice. It looks like a place people would actually want to spend a summer in, with its warm timber surfaces, considered proportions, and an undeniable calm that reads clearly even in photographs. Sustainability, when done right, does not ask you to give anything up. It asks you to think more carefully about what you actually need.

The collaborators list tells its own story: Velux, Dinesen, GROHE, Svane Køkkenet, Velfac, and ThermoCell, among others. These are not budget-line names. SAGA was not chasing a price point with EcoNeo. They were chasing a standard, and it shows in every decision, from the material palette to the fabrication method.

Whether EcoNeo becomes a scalable template for sustainable residential housing or remains a singular prototype is a question worth watching. The studio intends to develop it further for broader residential applications. Given their track record of designing for environments where there is genuinely no margin for error, I would take that intention seriously. EcoNeo is proof that the best ideas about how to live on Earth might just be the ones we developed while thinking about how to live somewhere else entirely.

During normal use, HealingFit TWS functions as a premium pair of true wireless earbuds with Bluetooth 6.0, Hybrid ANC, and five tunable sound modes built on MobiFren’s own MSTS sound tuning system. The company started building its own Bluetooth audio products in 2005 and brought its first Bluetooth earphones to market in 2006. MobiFren has maintained an ongoing relationship with Samsung through smartphone software verification work ever since. That two-decade grounding in Bluetooth audio is what gives HealingFit TWS its engineering footing.

The choice to build this platform on earbuds specifically is, in that context, a deliberate one. Earbuds are already the personal technology closest to the human body for most of the waking day. They’re phone-paired, habitually worn, and typically owned by the same people most likely to be using a health app. Embedding TES therapy into a device people already carry daily removes most of the adoption barrier entirely.

The hardware reflects that audio-first foundation. Alongside the TES system, HealingFit TWS delivers up to 6.5 hours of playback and up to 4.5 hours in TES mode, with Hybrid ANC, three microphones per side, and wear detection for auto-pause when an earbud is removed. Both earbuds and the Magnetic TES Link cable dock in a cylindrical charging case finished in anodized aluminum, designed to carry without fuss.

What Heo is ultimately proposing is a platform category that doesn’t quite have a name yet. What they don’t yet widely offer is a hardware path from that detection to user-controlled action. HealingFit TWS was built to be exactly that path, and it’s open to anyone willing to test it.

That’s a bold bet, and the category he’s describing doesn’t fully exist yet. This Zero-Carbon Colorado Cabin Was Built for a Family — and the Next Century of Mountain Living

There are cabins built for weekends, and then there’s Camp Meeker. Designed by Renée del Gaudio Architecture and completed in 2026, this 2,100-square-foot retreat in Allenspark, Colorado sits at the base of Mt. Meeker — a landscape a single family has returned to for nearly a century. The cabin wasn’t designed to impress. It was designed to endure.

The brief was rooted in something rare in contemporary architecture: restraint with purpose. Rather than loading the home with the usual domestic conveniences, the architects stripped the program back entirely. No television. No dishwasher. No microwave. What remains is exactly what a mountain retreat should be — a place that places the landscape first and forces you to look at it.

Structurally, the cabin is built for the realities of its environment. A concrete base and steel frame anchor the building to the site, while ironwood siding wraps the exterior in a material chosen specifically for fire resistance — a non-negotiable in Colorado’s high-elevation terrain. The steep metal roof does double duty: it deflects winter winds and gains enough height to accommodate a sleeping loft above the main floor, designated as the children’s quarters, giving the whole structure a playful, camp-like energy that its name earns honestly.

Inside, Renée del Gaudio made one decisive material call and committed to it completely. Rustic-grade oak covers the floors, walls, and ceilings in a continuous warm finish that collapses the boundary between surfaces. The main living area is organized around a central fireplace, flanked by vaulted timber ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that pull the surrounding alpine scenery directly into the room. Two double bedrooms and a single bedroom anchor one end of the main floor, each connected to a large outdoor terrace. Above, a rooftop deck offers unobstructed views of the mountain — built equally for afternoon sun and sleeping under open sky.

What makes Camp Meeker genuinely forward-looking is what’s hidden beneath it. A geothermal system draws on the earth’s stable temperature to heat and cool the cabin, replacing conventional fuel-based systems and bringing the home’s day-to-day operational carbon to zero. It’s sustainability framed not as a feature, but as a baseline expectation.

The architects describe it as a model for the next century of cabin design in the region. Looking at it, that doesn’t feel like overreach. Camp Meeker isn’t a trophy house dressed in rustic materials. It’s a building that understands exactly what it is, where it is, and who it’s for — and builds every decision around that clarity.

A Duck, Some Bent Tubes, and the Most Charming Lamp of 2026

The first thing you notice is the yellow. Not a soft, hedging yellow, but a full-commitment, matte, warm yellow that coats every millimeter of the piece without apology. Then you notice the shape. A long, arching neck. Two sturdy legs. A horizontal head that doubles as the light source. Duke, the table lamp designed by Liam de la Bedoyere of Bored Eye Design, is a duck. More precisely, it’s a duck drawn by someone who decided that one continuous tube was all they needed.

That’s the central idea, and it’s worth sitting with. De la Bedoyere’s design vocabulary here is essentially a single rule: take a tube, bend it, and let the animal emerge from the bends. No additional elements, no decorative flourishes, no mixed materials. Just the tube, its curves, and the form they describe. The result is a piece that communicates immediately. You read it as an animal before you register that it’s a lamp, which is the correct order of things.

Up close, the construction rewards attention. The tubular sections connect in visible segments, and those joints give the piece a modular, almost architectural quality that tempers the playfulness with something more considered. The bends themselves are generous and smooth, with a radiused curve that keeps everything feeling soft rather than rigid. The head is a cylinder open at the end, functioning as the spotlight, and that detail is quietly clever. The light doesn’t interrupt the form. It completes it, pointing forward from the duck’s snout like the whole thing was always meant to do exactly this.

The base is a flat circular disc, minimal and low to the surface. Two legs rise from it and immediately branch into the body, giving the lamp a planted, grounded stance that stops it from reading as fragile. And then there’s the cord, a braided yellow cable that matches the body exactly, looping out near the base. Most designers treat the cord as a problem to solve or something to hide. Here it’s an afterthought that became a feature, trailing away from the lamp like a tail. It’s one of those small decisions that reveals how thoroughly this design was thought through.

The monochromatic yellow does something important for how the silhouette reads. By removing any tonal contrast within the piece itself, the animal form becomes purer and more immediate. Your eye traces the outline rather than getting pulled into detail, which is exactly what you want from a lamp that’s also functioning as sculpture. The color also travels. Looking at Duke placed against warm wood, concrete, white walls, and natural linen, it doesn’t clash with any of them. Yellow at this saturation and matte finish is warmer than it is aggressive, and it reads more like a material choice than a color choice.

The design is also genuinely versatile, which isn’t something you can say about most statement objects. Duke works in a child’s bedroom because it looks like a toy. It works on a bookshelf or a credenza in an adult living space because the construction is clean and the form is abstract enough to read as sculptural. Place it next to a magazine on a coffee table and it looks like something you’d find in a design gallery. That range of contexts isn’t accidental. It comes from the clarity of the underlying concept. When a design is resolved at the idea level, it adapts.

What makes Duke feel significant beyond its charm is that de la Bedoyere is clearly developing a language, not just making individual pieces. The Flamingo Lamp came first, and the same logic runs through both, which means the interest is in the system as much as the object. A lamp collection built entirely on the premise of one continuous tube tracing an animal is a genuinely interesting editorial position for a designer to take. It’s a constraint that produces rather than limits, and that’s the kind of thinking that tends to produce lasting work.

Duke doesn’t try to do many things. It tries to do one thing very well, and in design, that’s harder than it sounds.

Most houses start with a blueprint. Jisoo Yoo’s Dream House started with a question: how do the dreams and desires we carry shape the landscape of the world we inhabit? The answer, it turns out, is a floating structure made of clothing.

Yoo, a Seoul-born artist who lives and works in France, has been quietly building one of the more compelling bodies of work in contemporary art, one that orbits around the domestic, the ephemeral, and the barely-visible structures that hold our lives together. Dream House, her latest installation presented at (F)ESTIVALES at Les Tanneries, Centre d’art contemporain, is exactly the kind of project that makes you stop and genuinely reconsider what a home actually is.

Here’s how it works. Participants are invited to contribute a garment, something personal, something worn, and mark it with handwritten texts and drawings. These pieces of clothing then become the literal building blocks of the structure, each one a personal archive, each one a load-bearing element. That’s a beautiful idea, and I mean that without a trace of irony. We spend so much time thinking about homes in terms of square footage, property value, and interior aesthetics that we rarely stop to ask what a home is actually made of. Yoo forces the question. Her installation suggests that the answer has less to do with materials and more to do with desire, with the accumulated weight of what people want, need, and imagine for themselves and for each other.

Art that treats the domestic as a lens for examining social and cultural forces is nothing new. But Yoo brings something specific to it. Born in Seoul and trained in France, she operates between two very different cultural frameworks around the idea of home, and her practice reflects that quietly felt tension. Her works often feature spaces that feel familiar but refuse to stay solid. Rooms that waver. Houses that float. Structures that appear and then dissolve. It’s a recurring language across her portfolio, and with Dream House, it feels most fully realized.

Dream House is not trying to comfort you. It’s trying to make you notice something. The garments contributed by participants carry real personal weight: literal handwriting, actual drawings, the residue of real lives. And yet the house they form is temporary. It rises, exists briefly, and then it’s gone. Yoo describes the floating structure as embodying both the creative force of desire and the fleeting nature of existence. The house briefly emerges through people’s dreams, and that, apparently, is enough.

I think that’s the most honest thing any artist has said about housing in a long time. We build our ideas of home from desire, from inherited images of what shelter is supposed to look like, from what we were told to want, and from what we quietly imagine when no one is watching. And all of it is more temporary than we tend to admit. The average person moves multiple times in their life. Neighborhoods change. The house you grew up in gets renovated beyond recognition or torn down entirely. The physical structure of home has always been more fragile than we want it to be.

What Yoo does is make that fragility visible without making it tragic. The floating structure is genuinely striking to look at. The garments create a soft, almost organic texture that reads as intimate rather than architectural, which is exactly the point. You’re not looking at a building. You’re looking at a collective act of imagination, briefly held together by shared hope. Jisoo Yoo is an artist worth paying close attention to. Her work doesn’t announce itself loudly, but it asks questions that stick. Dream House is a reminder that the spaces we live in are not neutral. They are built, always, from something we wanted.

In a conversation with Yanko Design, the Dutch design house laid out a vision for interiors that respond to time, mood and the people living inside them, rather than staying frozen in one fixed arrangement from the day they’re installed.

It is a strange kind of ambition for a furniture brand to have. Strange but brilliant. Moooi has spent 25 years refusing to make boring things, and its next chapter looks less like a product catalog and more like a philosophy for how homes should feel. Not smarter. Not more automated. Just more alive, in the same unpredictable way the outside world already is.

The concept has a name, The Living Room, and it started as a simple question the brand kept circling back to. What if an interior never sat still, but moved through a day the way the world outside a window does, gradually and without announcing itself. Lighting could soften as morning turns to afternoon. Objects could shift subtly in response to who’s in the room and what they’re doing. Nothing about it reads as gimmick or gadgetry, which is deliberate, since Moooi keeps insisting this has nothing to do with sensors or automation. It reads instead like weather indoors, a mood that drifts rather than a setting you toggle. That distinction matters more than it sounds.

Atmosphere has subtly become the real product Moooi sells, and everything else follows from it. The brand says its process now starts with a single question, how do people want to feel the moment they walk in, long before anyone picks a fabric or a finish. That thinking explains why Moooi’s catalog has crept well past furniture and lighting into wallcoverings, carpets, ceramic tiles and even bespoke scent. Each addition exists to thicken the sensory layer of a room rather than decorate its surface. Building a mood board was never the goal. Building an entire world was.

Personalization is where the philosophy stops being poetic and starts getting genuinely strange, in the best sense. Moooi’s collaboration with EveryHuman uses AI to translate a person’s mood into a custom room fragrance, treating scent as another material a designer can shape rather than an afterthought sprayed in before guests arrive. That same instinct extends to digitally printed carpets and layered surfaces built around individual taste instead of a single house style. The brand frames this as giving creative tools to people rather than finished products, which flips the usual furniture relationship on its head. You are not buying a chair here. You are being handed the freedom to keep shaping a space as your own taste evolves.

None of this would land without Moooi’s oldest habit, which the brand still describes as an ambition to stop the boring business. That mantra showed up loudly at the brand’s 25th anniversary installation in Milan this year, a mirrored, multi sensory environment built at Superstudio Più with choreographer Yoann Bourgeois, layering light, movement and scent into something meant to be felt rather than simply viewed. Marcel Wanders has said there’s no one who walks through a Moooi installation feeling nothing, and that stubborn refusal to be neutral is the connective tissue between a 2001 startup and a 2026 AI fragrance experiment.

Where this goes next is of more consequence than where it started. Moooi has been clear that technology should function as another creative material, sitting alongside craft and color rather than steering the whole show. If The Living Room concept ever leaves the realm of installation and lands inside actual homes, it will be a genuinely different pitch than anything coming out of the smart home industry right now. Not a house that watches you. A house that keeps you company.

The Soviet Union Built UFO-Shaped Circuses. Now You Can Fold One.

The Soviet Union had a complicated relationship with spectacle. Everything about Soviet ideology pointed toward collective purpose, practical function, and the rejection of excess. And then they went and built circus arenas shaped like flying saucers, out of raw concrete, in capital cities across Central Asia and Eastern Europe. If that is not a contradiction worth paying attention to, I do not know what is.

Cirk, a new book from David Navarro and Martyna Sobecka of Zupagrafika, makes that contradiction its entire subject. The Poznań-based design duo have spent over a decade documenting the brutalist and modernist architecture of the former Eastern Bloc, and Cirk is their latest, most playful entry in that ongoing project. The book surveys the permanent circus arenas built across the former USSR from the 1960s through the 1980s, buildings that, as Zupagrafika puts it, combined “socialist modernism, experimental engineering, and choreographed spectacle.” It is an architectural typology most people have never thought about, and yet once you see these buildings, you cannot stop looking.

But the part of Cirk that has people talking is not the photography, gorgeous as it is. It is the second half of the book: five press-out paper models of actual circus buildings, designed for readers to punch out and assemble with nothing but glue. The five models represent the Kyrgyz State Circus in Bishkek, the Chișinău State Circus in Moldova, the Dnipro State Circus in Ukraine, the Great Moscow State Circus, and the Tashkent State Circus in Uzbekistan. Five buildings. Five cities. Five strikingly different pieces of architecture, each one reduced to a miniature you can hold in your hands.

I have a genuine soft spot for paper models, and I think their reputation as a “children’s activity” has always undersold what they actually are. A well-designed paper model is an act of translation. Someone has to study a real building, understand its geometry from every angle, figure out how to collapse it into a flat sheet, and do it in a way that holds together when you fold it back up. That is not trivial when the buildings in question are full of curves, cantilevers, and circular geometry. The circus arenas in Cirk are not simple boxes. Many have sweeping domed roofs and wide cylindrical bases, and the kind of sculptural confidence that makes them look like props from a science fiction film. Getting that geometry to behave on paper requires real design skill, and Zupagrafika clearly has it.

The studio has been producing paper model kits alongside their books for years, so this is familiar territory. But tucking five models into the back of a hardcover book feels like a deliberate choice, not an afterthought. The models are not a gimmick. They are an argument. You can look at photographs of the Great Moscow State Circus for a long time, and it will remain something abstract and distant. When you press out those perforated shapes and fold them into a miniature version of that building, something shifts. The scale changes. The building becomes tactile and personal. You start to understand its proportions in a way that a photograph simply cannot deliver.

There is also something quietly political about the whole exercise. These arenas were built as monuments to Soviet power, intended to be overwhelming and permanent. Reducing one to a paper model is almost cheeky. It takes these grand gestures of ideological architecture and makes them domestic, approachable, collectible. The Soviet state is long gone. Someone is now folding the Great Moscow State Circus on their kitchen table. History has a strange sense of humor.

Cirk is a hardcover running 88 pages, sized generously at 30 by 24 centimeters, giving the models room to breathe on the page. The first half carries photography and historical essays, with a foreword from writer Jelena Prokopljević. It is a complete package: context, visual archive, and the hands-on satisfaction of making something. For anyone drawn to architecture, Cold War history, or just the very specific pleasure of a perforated page coming apart cleanly, Cirk is a book that earns its shelf space. The flying-saucer buildings are absolutely worth it.

Fiore Is a Wall Light, a Vase, and a Fragrance All at Once

Most lighting does one thing: it illuminates. If it’s beautiful, that’s a bonus. If it fits the space, you’re winning. But every once in a while, a design comes along and quietly expands the definition of what an object is supposed to be, and Fiore by Jimmy Rojas is doing exactly that.

Fiore is a wall-mounted sconce, but to call it only that would be selling it short. At its core, it’s a multisensory piece that combines light, living flowers, and fragrance into a single wall-mounted object. The concept is elegantly simple: a built-in vase holds real blooms, and a signature scent designed to complement their natural aroma diffuses into the room. You’re not just looking at a beautiful light fixture; you’re experiencing it. You smell it. You watch the flowers change as the week goes on.

The design came out of Jimmy Rojas’ time at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and it’s been collecting recognition ever since. Fiore earned a Silver at the International Design Awards in the Conceptual Products category, was a People’s Choice honoree at the 2025 NYCxDESIGN Awards, and made its way to Salone Satellite in Milan, one of the most competitive stages for emerging designers in the world. These aren’t small accolades. They signal that the design community is paying attention, and for good reason.

What makes Fiore feel particularly relevant right now is the way it taps into something a lot of us are quietly craving: interiors that actually engage more than just our eyes. Biophilic design, the idea of bringing natural elements into our living spaces, has been a conversation in design circles for years. But Fiore takes that concept and makes it literal in the most delicate way possible. A real flower in your wall, radiating fragrance into the room. No screen, no app, no complicated setup. Just nature, light, and scent.

I’ll be honest, I have a slight bias here. I’ve always believed that the best design doesn’t announce itself loudly. It earns its place in a room by making life feel slightly better, slightly richer, in ways you notice over time rather than all at once. Fiore operates on that frequency. It’s the kind of object you come home to and slowly appreciate more as the days pass.

It’s also worth looking at how Fiore fits into the current interior design moment. Maximalism is back with force, from statement furniture to bold wallpapers to gallery walls stacked floor to ceiling. Within that landscape, Fiore manages to feel both bold and restrained. It’s wall-mounted, so it doesn’t compete for floor or shelf space. But it holds living flowers and diffuses scent, so it commands presence in a way that a standard sconce never could. Balancing those two qualities is genuinely difficult to pull off.

Rojas clearly understands that fragrance is one of the most underused tools in interior design. Candles and reed diffusers have long dominated the home fragrance space, and while they work well, they’re objects that sit on a surface and do their thing passively. Fiore integrates scent into the architecture of the room itself, into the wall, which feels like a genuinely new idea. The fact that the fragrance is designed to pair specifically with the real flowers in the vase adds another layer of intentionality that sets this apart from a concept piece that’s merely clever.

If Fiore moves into full production, there are real-world questions worth asking: how often do the flowers need replacing, what happens in winter when fresh blooms are harder to source, and whether the fragrance component can be made refillable and sustainable. Those aren’t dealbreakers, just the details that turn a great concept into a great product. But as a concept, Fiore is one of the more complete design ideas in recent memory. It knows what it wants to be, and it commits fully. Lighting has always been foundational to how a space feels. Fiore is simply asking whether it couldn’t also shape how a space smells, and how alive it feels. The answer, apparently, is yes.

Portable party speakers have settled into a comfortable but predictable aesthetic: boxy, rugged, cylindrical, occasionally translucent. They compete mostly on specs, with loudness and battery life doing most of the heavy lifting in marketing copy. The design rarely causes a double-take. Most of them look like pieces of gear that belong in a hiking backpack, not a conversation starter you’d voluntarily carry to a campsite because someone just had to see it.

The Ultimea Go throws all of that out by doing something nobody asked for but nobody can really argue with: it looks exactly like a jerry can. The resemblance isn’t a stretch or a loose visual metaphor. It’s a deliberate full-scale commitment to the fuel container form, right down to the handle and the boxy proportions. The gimmick and the product are the same thing here, and it lands.

Under the shell, the speaker pulls its weight acoustically. The driver setup includes dual 5-inch woofers, dual 3-inch full-range drivers, and a 1-inch tweeter, all contributing to a 300 W peak output that Ultimea says is loud enough for groups of 10 to 20 people. The 360° omnidirectional design means the sound radiates in all directions rather than projecting from one face, which matters when a crowd is gathered around rather than sitting in front of it.

What tips it further toward the unexpected is the inclusion of two microphone inputs and a guitar input alongside the standard Bluetooth 5.4 connection. That turns it from a passive playback device into something a busker could plug into on a street corner or a backyard musician could use for a spontaneous after-dinner set. The inputs don’t feel like afterthoughts; they actively expand what the speaker is for.

For anyone who wants to scale up, Auracast support allows playback to sync across up to 100 devices simultaneously. Practically, that means linking multiple speakers across a large space without the usual signal degradation or timing offsets that come with daisy-chaining Bluetooth units together. Two Ultimea Go speakers can also be paired in TWS mode for true stereo output, making the jerry can a unit that can grow with the occasion.

The battery runs for up to 16 hours on a single charge, which holds through a full outdoor day without needing a top-up. IPX4 water resistance adds a reasonable layer of protection against splashes and light rain, so setting it near a pool or leaving it outside during a light drizzle isn’t cause for panic. RGB lights add the requisite visual flair without being the only thing the design has going for it.

An app handles the finer controls, and a bass boost function gives the low end an extra push when the situation calls for it. For decades, Wacom has held an almost unchallenged grip on the drawing tablet and pen display market. Its products are so trusted that studios and design firms often keep them running for years, sometimes long after they’ve been discontinued. Lately, though, its rivals have been gaining a lot of attention, pushing increasingly attractive prices and expanding into new product categories.

That doesn’t mean Wacom has been idling. The company is finally wading into standalone Android tablet territory with the MovinkPad 11 and the more premium MovinkPad Pro 14, a proper portable drawing machine aimed squarely at working creatives. We’ve been spending time with the larger of the two, along with the new Wacom Art Pen 2, and the question is whether it’s worth every dollar of its price tag.

Aesthetics

Right out of the box, the MovinkPad Pro 14 doesn’t dazzle the way other tablets in its price range tend to. There are no flashy colors, no ultra-thin borders, no polished surfaces. The bezels are noticeably wide, the default wallpaper is a solid, flat light gray, and the whole thing carries a stubbornly plain look that feels almost out of step with the competition.

It’s all very much by design. Wacom’s intent is to mimic the look and feel of a physical sketchbook, the kind artists, designers, and architects carry everywhere. The device comes in one color, light gray, which echoes the tone of most sketchbook paper. Its rectangular form, wide borders included, also closely mirrors the footprint of an A4 pad, binding and all.

The sides of the device carry that same restraint. One long edge holds the power button, volume rocker, and microSD slot, while the opposite edge features connectors for the optional cover accessory. The short edges house the speakers, and the bottom is reserved for branding, regulatory inscriptions, and four rubber feet. There’s nothing extraneous, nothing decorative, and nothing that distracts from the task you’re there to do.

The included Pro Pen 3 follows the same philosophy. It’s all black, slim, and cylindrical, with a body so uniform it almost looks like a high-end mechanical pencil. The three side buttons are barely raised, sitting nearly flush against the barrel for a cleaner look. Unscrewing the rear half reveals three replacement nibs tucked inside: a Carbon Shaft nib, a Felt nib, and a POM nib.

Wacom’s vision for the MovinkPad Pro 14 is to replicate the feeling of picking up a sketchbook, flipping to a fresh page, and getting straight to work. That intent comes through clearly because the tablet removes just about every visual, physical, and digital distraction it can. It doesn’t try to be the slickest-looking device in the room. It tries to be the one you reach for first.

Ergonomics

At 14 inches, the MovinkPad Pro 14 isn’t something you’d hold up one-handed for long, but at just 699 grams and 5.9mm thin, it slips easily into any bag. Resting it on your arm or lap doesn’t feel like a chore either. For creatives who move between locations throughout the day, that combination of size and lightness goes a long way toward making it a genuinely portable tool.

The four rubber feet on the underside keep the tablet from sliding around on a desk and slightly raise the back off the surface, which helps with airflow. There’s no built-in kickstand or angled stand, so if you prefer working at a tilt, you’ll need to source one separately, either from Wacom’s own accessory line or from a third-party option. It’s a small gap in an otherwise thoughtful package.

Those wide bezels, which might seem like a design quirk at first, actually earn their place here. They give you a comfortable inactive area to rest your palm or fingers when gripping the tablet from the sides, so your touch input doesn’t accidentally interfere with whatever you’re drawing. It’s the kind of practical thinking that tends to reveal itself only once you’re deep into a long session.

That said, the MovinkPad Pro 14’s footprint means it isn’t something you’d pull from a bag and start sketching on at a moment’s notice. For that kind of spontaneous work, the smaller MovinkPad 11 is probably the better fit. The Pro 14 is better suited to longer, more involved sessions away from the desk, as long as you’ve found a comfortable spot to settle in.

The Pro Pen 3 is well-balanced and comfortable enough in the hand, though your experience will vary depending on what you’re used to. Its slim, pencil-like build can lead to some cramping over long sessions for those accustomed to thicker tools. Official grips are available but aren’t cheap. The nearly-flushed buttons are also too easy to press accidentally. The Art Pen 2, which we’re also reviewing, offers a wider barrel as an alternative but is sold separately.

Performance

Under the hood, the MovinkPad Pro 14 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, expandable via microSD up to 2TB. The processor isn’t the newest available, but it handles everything thrown at it with ease. Multitasking is smooth, app switching is fluid, and there’s no sense that the hardware is struggling to keep pace with anything.

The 14-inch OLED display runs at a 2880×1800 resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate, treated with anti-fingerprint, anti-reflective, and anti-glare textured glass. The wide rectangular aspect ratio works in favor of drawing apps that line their UI panels along the sides, something squarish iPad screens can’t accommodate as cleanly. The textured coating adds a satisfying scratchiness to each stroke, and pen accuracy is, naturally, exactly what you’d expect from Wacom.

There are no cameras on the MovinkPad Pro 14, front or back. That’s a deliberate choice. There’s no temptation to flip over to social media, no accidental video calls, nothing that pulls focus away from what you’re there to do. Passively watching a tutorial in a corner of the screen is about as off-task as it gets, which, honestly, isn’t a bad thing for anyone prone to distraction. Split-screen functionality makes it easy to have a reference off to the side while you work.

The software side is equally stripped down. Android 15 comes installed with zero bloatware and just three Wacom-made apps: Shelf for your gallery, Tips for settings, and Canvas, a quick sketching surface that wakes directly from sleep with a tap of the pen. It’s intentionally bare-bones for capturing fleeting ideas, though a few more brush options would genuinely be welcome. From Canvas, you can instantly send your sketch to an Android app, though it seems to be limited to Clip Studio Paint, iBisPaint, and Autodesk Sketchbook. Hoping it will offer some flexibility in the future.

Speaking of apps, desktop-grade drawing applications like Clip Studio Paint and Krita run without issue. The broader Android ecosystem opens up a decent range of options, though it’s worth remembering that anything exclusive to Windows or Mac won’t be available here. Customizing the pen buttons is also off the table, a limitation of the Android platform rather than any fault of the hardware itself.

The Instant Pen Display Mode is arguably the most intriguing feature here. It converts the tablet into a secondary display for a Windows or Mac computer, via USB or Wi-Fi, turning it into a portable, makeshift Cintiq. It’s part of Wacom Lab, an experimental creator community that lets users explore and provide feedback on new creative possibilities through beta features. As of this writing, the setup process involves quite a number of steps, and pen button support is currently limited to toggling a small side panel for common modifier keys. It definitely shows promise, so hopefully development will be quick.

Battery life is genuinely impressive. The 10,000mAh cell can sustain nearly five days on standby and supports 65W fast charging, though you’ll need to bring your own charger since none is included in the box. The USB-C port is only 2.0, so it doesn’t charge as quickly as the spec might suggest, but an hour or more of active drawing barely makes a dent in the battery.

Sustainability

Wacom doesn’t use recycled or notably sustainable materials in the MovinkPad Pro 14 itself, but the company does meet several other environmental benchmarks worth noting. Its packaging is compact, minimal, entirely plastic-free, and fully recyclable, while the device is built with the kind of durability Wacom products are known for, the sort that keeps them in active use long after most gadgets would have been binned.

That longevity argument holds well for Wacom’s drawing tablets and pen displays, which tend to outlast their useful lives many times over. A standalone Android tablet is a different matter, though. Apps like Clip Studio Paint have already dropped Android 12 support, making regular OS updates critical. Wacom has committed to keeping the MovinkPad Pro 14 current, but no clear update schedule or roadmap has been shared publicly yet.

Value

At $899.95, the MovinkPad Pro 14 isn’t an impulse buy, but it’s a reasonably grounded one. An equivalent iPad would require buying the Apple Pencil separately, while a comparable Samsung Galaxy Tab tends to run noticeably higher. For a tablet built specifically around the drawing experience, with Wacom’s pen technology at its core, the price lands in a range that’s genuinely difficult to argue against.

The large screen and capable hardware make it a compelling option for creatives who frequently work away from their desks. It doesn’t sacrifice quality for the sake of portability. With the right app installed, it functions as a capable mobile workstation wherever you happen to be. And when a PC or Mac app becomes unavoidable, Instant Pen Display Mode is there to bridge the gap.

There are caveats, of course. The beta status of Instant Pen Display Mode means it’s not quite ready to be a daily driver feature. You’ll also need to feel at home with Android’s drawing ecosystem for this workflow to really make sense. And the uncertainty around long-term Android updates is a concern that Wacom will need to address more concretely before most buyers can put it fully to rest.

Verdict

The MovinkPad Pro 14 isn’t Wacom’s first stab at a standalone portable device. Veterans will remember the Windows-based Cintiq Companions and the MobileStudio Pros. But this is by far the most portable and clearly focused version of that idea. It doesn’t try to cram Windows into a pen display. It’s a purpose-built mobile experience that happens to carry a Cintiq-like trick discreetly tucked away.

At the same time, it doesn’t operate like an Android tablet with a Wacom digitizer tacked on, which is essentially what Samsung’s Wacom-enabled slates are. Wacom has built something around a specific, coherent idea: a true digital sketchbook. Some software edges still need ironing out, but for artists and designers craving genuine creative freedom outside the studio, the MovinkPad Pro 14 offers something few tablets in its class can match.

India’s Anthill House Has No AC and Stays Cool Anyway

We’ve been building houses wrong. Not structurally, not legally, and not in any way that’s easy to name. But somewhere along the line, the conversation around home design shifted away from how does this building breathe toward what does this building look like on a feed. That’s why The Anthill, a new brick residence in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra by Kaushal Tatiya Architects, feels like such a pointed correction. Not a provocation. A correction.

The premise sounds deceptively simple: a house modeled after an ant mound. Not the insect itself, but the engineering intelligence of what it builds. Ants have been solving thermal regulation, cross-ventilation, and spatial hierarchy problems for millions of years, with no blueprint, no software, and no electricity required. Kaushal Tatiya, the firm’s founder, described the anthill not as a literal form but as “an intelligent climatic organism,” one able to “regulate temperature, create ventilation through voids, and function through a network of interconnected chambers without any imposed geometry.” That single observation is what the entire project is built on, and it shows.

The house sits low in the landscape, almost terrain-like, its exposed brick facade functioning as much as an environmental filter as it does a structural shell. From the outside, it reads as deliberately introverted: solid walls and perforated surfaces that hold back the glare before it ever reaches the living spaces inside. The real architecture begins once you start moving through it. Rooms branch off from larger communal volumes, ceiling heights shift unexpectedly, and natural light arrives filtered and softened rather than harsh. The passage between spaces becomes the experience, not just a means of getting from one room to another.

This is a design principle modernism largely traded away in favor of open-plan everything and maximum sight lines. The Anthill doesn’t make that trade. Its stepped terraces and alternating balconies recall the traditional Indian rooftop concept of the chhat, creating layered, shaded thresholds that do the cooling work before the sun reaches the interior. A 12-foot cantilevered slab, supported through brick in compression, adds a more deliberate architectural gesture to the otherwise organic composition.

It’s worth pausing on the sustainability side of this project, because it earns more than a passing mention. The Anthill operates entirely on passive systems: cross ventilation, thermal mass, and shaded courtyards. No mechanical ventilation. In a region defined by extreme heat and intense sunlight, that isn’t a compromise. It’s a design strategy that trusts the building’s own intelligence. The idea that architecture should outlast any power grid it’s connected to feels increasingly important, and The Anthill makes that case without saying a word about it.

I think what gets undersold in conversations about sustainable design is how genuinely radical simplicity is. We’ve normalized a model where buildings are essentially sealed boxes, then mechanically conditioned to be habitable. That approach is energy-intensive, expensive, and fragile in ways we rarely acknowledge. The Anthill argues the opposite: that a building designed with enough spatial intelligence doesn’t need to fight its climate. It learns to negotiate with it instead.

The visual language of the project carries all of this without being heavy-handed. The brick is warm and earthy, the curves are organic without being theatrical, and the overall effect is of a building that looks like it belongs to the land rather than placed on top of it. What The Anthill ultimately puts on the table is a question worth sitting with: what if the most intelligent design move isn’t to add more technology, but to study what natural systems already perfected? The Anthill is a case where the most forward-looking move was to look at something ancient.
