Remote work has fundamentally changed how often people need access to devices they aren’t sitting in front of. The tools built for this, however, haven’t kept up. What sets the Comet Q apart is that it operates at the hardware level, not through software installed on the target device. That distinction matters more than it sounds. Traditional remote desktop software relies on the operating system and an active network connection, failing the moment a device sleeps, locks, or loses Wi-Fi. The Comet Q keeps working through all of that, as long as the device stays powered on and hasn’t entered a hibernation state that cuts off its HDMI/USB output.

That control comes through a single USB-C cable that simultaneously carries video, data, and power, doing away with the HDMI dongle and USB hub that traditional KVMs require. Video output reaches up to 2K at 60 fps with two-way audio, and a built-in USB-C passthrough port means the device being controlled stays charged throughout the session. It’s a genuinely pocket-sized setup that actually earns that description.

Where the Comet Q breaks new ground is with mobile devices. No KVM was ever built for them, and if something went wrong remotely, there was no clean solution short of being physically present. It connects directly through the USB-C port, working with iPhones from the iPhone 15 onward (excluding the iPhone 16e and later budget models), iPads, and a wide range of Android phones and tablets, provided the port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode.

For decades, Wacom has held an almost unchallenged grip on the drawing tablet and pen display market. Its products are so trusted that studios and design firms often keep them running for years, sometimes long after they’ve been discontinued. Lately, though, its rivals have been gaining a lot of attention, pushing increasingly attractive prices and expanding into new product categories.

That doesn’t mean Wacom has been idling. The company is finally wading into standalone Android tablet territory with the MovinkPad 11 and the more premium MovinkPad Pro 14, a proper portable drawing machine aimed squarely at working creatives. We’ve been spending time with the larger of the two, along with the new Wacom Art Pen 2, and the question is whether it’s worth every dollar of its price tag.

Aesthetics

Right out of the box, the MovinkPad Pro 14 doesn’t dazzle the way other tablets in its price range tend to. There are no flashy colors, no ultra-thin borders, no polished surfaces. The bezels are noticeably wide, the default wallpaper is a solid, flat light gray, and the whole thing carries a stubbornly plain look that feels almost out of step with the competition.

It’s all very much by design. Wacom’s intent is to mimic the look and feel of a physical sketchbook, the kind artists, designers, and architects carry everywhere. The device comes in one color, light gray, which echoes the tone of most sketchbook paper. Its rectangular form, wide borders included, also closely mirrors the footprint of an A4 pad, binding and all.

The sides of the device carry that same restraint. One long edge holds the power button, volume rocker, and microSD slot, while the opposite edge features connectors for the optional cover accessory. The short edges house the speakers, and the bottom is reserved for branding, regulatory inscriptions, and four rubber feet. There’s nothing extraneous, nothing decorative, and nothing that distracts from the task you’re there to do.

The included Pro Pen 3 follows the same philosophy. It’s all black, slim, and cylindrical, with a body so uniform it almost looks like a high-end mechanical pencil. The three side buttons are barely raised, sitting nearly flush against the barrel for a cleaner look. Unscrewing the rear half reveals three replacement nibs tucked inside: a Carbon Shaft nib, a Felt nib, and a POM nib.

Wacom’s vision for the MovinkPad Pro 14 is to replicate the feeling of picking up a sketchbook, flipping to a fresh page, and getting straight to work. That intent comes through clearly because the tablet removes just about every visual, physical, and digital distraction it can. It doesn’t try to be the slickest-looking device in the room. It tries to be the one you reach for first.

Ergonomics

At 14 inches, the MovinkPad Pro 14 isn’t something you’d hold up one-handed for long, but at just 699 grams and 5.9mm thin, it slips easily into any bag. Resting it on your arm or lap doesn’t feel like a chore either. For creatives who move between locations throughout the day, that combination of size and lightness goes a long way toward making it a genuinely portable tool.

The four rubber feet on the underside keep the tablet from sliding around on a desk and slightly raise the back off the surface, which helps with airflow. There’s no built-in kickstand or angled stand, so if you prefer working at a tilt, you’ll need to source one separately, either from Wacom’s own accessory line or from a third-party option. It’s a small gap in an otherwise thoughtful package.

Those wide bezels, which might seem like a design quirk at first, actually earn their place here. They give you a comfortable inactive area to rest your palm or fingers when gripping the tablet from the sides, so your touch input doesn’t accidentally interfere with whatever you’re drawing. It’s the kind of practical thinking that tends to reveal itself only once you’re deep into a long session.

That said, the MovinkPad Pro 14’s footprint means it isn’t something you’d pull from a bag and start sketching on at a moment’s notice. For that kind of spontaneous work, the smaller MovinkPad 11 is probably the better fit. The Pro 14 is better suited to longer, more involved sessions away from the desk, as long as you’ve found a comfortable spot to settle in.

The Pro Pen 3 is well-balanced and comfortable enough in the hand, though your experience will vary depending on what you’re used to. Its slim, pencil-like build can lead to some cramping over long sessions for those accustomed to thicker tools. Official grips are available but aren’t cheap. The nearly-flushed buttons are also too easy to press accidentally. The Art Pen 2, which we’re also reviewing, offers a wider barrel as an alternative but is sold separately.

Performance

Under the hood, the MovinkPad Pro 14 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, expandable via microSD up to 2TB. The processor isn’t the newest available, but it handles everything thrown at it with ease. Multitasking is smooth, app switching is fluid, and there’s no sense that the hardware is struggling to keep pace with anything.

The 14-inch OLED display runs at a 2880×1800 resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate, treated with anti-fingerprint, anti-reflective, and anti-glare textured glass. The wide rectangular aspect ratio works in favor of drawing apps that line their UI panels along the sides, something squarish iPad screens can’t accommodate as cleanly. The textured coating adds a satisfying scratchiness to each stroke, and pen accuracy is, naturally, exactly what you’d expect from Wacom.

There are no cameras on the MovinkPad Pro 14, front or back. That’s a deliberate choice. There’s no temptation to flip over to social media, no accidental video calls, nothing that pulls focus away from what you’re there to do. Passively watching a tutorial in a corner of the screen is about as off-task as it gets, which, honestly, isn’t a bad thing for anyone prone to distraction. Split-screen functionality makes it easy to have a reference off to the side while you work.

The software side is equally stripped down. Android 15 comes installed with zero bloatware and just three Wacom-made apps: Shelf for your gallery, Tips for settings, and Canvas, a quick sketching surface that wakes directly from sleep with a tap of the pen. It’s intentionally bare-bones for capturing fleeting ideas, though a few more brush options would genuinely be welcome. From Canvas, you can instantly send your sketch to an Android app, though it seems to be limited to Clip Studio Paint, iBisPaint, and Autodesk Sketchbook. Hoping it will offer some flexibility in the future.

Speaking of apps, desktop-grade drawing applications like Clip Studio Paint and Krita run without issue. The broader Android ecosystem opens up a decent range of options, though it’s worth remembering that anything exclusive to Windows or Mac won’t be available here. Customizing the pen buttons is also off the table, a limitation of the Android platform rather than any fault of the hardware itself.

The Instant Pen Display Mode is arguably the most intriguing feature here. It converts the tablet into a secondary display for a Windows or Mac computer, via USB or Wi-Fi, turning it into a portable, makeshift Cintiq. It’s part of Wacom Lab, an experimental creator community that lets users explore and provide feedback on new creative possibilities through beta features. As of this writing, the setup process involves quite a number of steps, and pen button support is currently limited to toggling a small side panel for common modifier keys. It definitely shows promise, so hopefully development will be quick.

Battery life is genuinely impressive. The 10,000mAh cell can sustain nearly five days on standby and supports 65W fast charging, though you’ll need to bring your own charger since none is included in the box. The USB-C port is only 2.0, so it doesn’t charge as quickly as the spec might suggest, but an hour or more of active drawing barely makes a dent in the battery.

Sustainability

Wacom doesn’t use recycled or notably sustainable materials in the MovinkPad Pro 14 itself, but the company does meet several other environmental benchmarks worth noting. Its packaging is compact, minimal, entirely plastic-free, and fully recyclable, while the device is built with the kind of durability Wacom products are known for, the sort that keeps them in active use long after most gadgets would have been binned.

That longevity argument holds well for Wacom’s drawing tablets and pen displays, which tend to outlast their useful lives many times over. A standalone Android tablet is a different matter, though. Apps like Clip Studio Paint have already dropped Android 12 support, making regular OS updates critical. Wacom has committed to keeping the MovinkPad Pro 14 current, but no clear update schedule or roadmap has been shared publicly yet.

Value

At $899.95, the MovinkPad Pro 14 isn’t an impulse buy, but it’s a reasonably grounded one. An equivalent iPad would require buying the Apple Pencil separately, while a comparable Samsung Galaxy Tab tends to run noticeably higher. For a tablet built specifically around the drawing experience, with Wacom’s pen technology at its core, the price lands in a range that’s genuinely difficult to argue against.

The large screen and capable hardware make it a compelling option for creatives who frequently work away from their desks. It doesn’t sacrifice quality for the sake of portability. With the right app installed, it functions as a capable mobile workstation wherever you happen to be. And when a PC or Mac app becomes unavoidable, Instant Pen Display Mode is there to bridge the gap.

There are caveats, of course. The beta status of Instant Pen Display Mode means it’s not quite ready to be a daily driver feature. You’ll also need to feel at home with Android’s drawing ecosystem for this workflow to really make sense. And the uncertainty around long-term Android updates is a concern that Wacom will need to address more concretely before most buyers can put it fully to rest.

Verdict

The MovinkPad Pro 14 isn’t Wacom’s first stab at a standalone portable device. Veterans will remember the Windows-based Cintiq Companions and the MobileStudio Pros. But this is by far the most portable and clearly focused version of that idea. It doesn’t try to cram Windows into a pen display. It’s a purpose-built mobile experience that happens to carry a Cintiq-like trick discreetly tucked away.

At the same time, it doesn’t operate like an Android tablet with a Wacom digitizer tacked on, which is essentially what Samsung’s Wacom-enabled slates are. Wacom has built something around a specific, coherent idea: a true digital sketchbook. Some software edges still need ironing out, but for artists and designers craving genuine creative freedom outside the studio, the MovinkPad Pro 14 offers something few tablets in its class can match.

The pen comes in an all-black finish, which keeps things clean and consistent, and makes the angled buttons stand out just enough to locate them quickly by sight.

Ergonomics

The pen is well-balanced and feels substantial in the hand without being heavy. The wider barrel suits anyone who finds slimmer pens like the Pro Pen 3 a bit uncomfortable during long sessions, though that’s always a personal call. The three raised, angled buttons make accidental presses nearly impossible and are effortless to identify by feel, which matters when your eyes are glued to the canvas.

The flared shape does come with a trade-off. It won’t sit easily in most pen loop accessories or grip covers, and there’s no way to slim it down if the barrel feels too wide. That’s the opposite situation from the Pro Pen 3, where an aftermarket grip can always bulk things up. The Art Pen 2’s shape is fixed, and you work with it or find something else.

Performance

Pressure sensitivity sits at 8,192 levels with full tilt support, putting it on par with the best pens at any price. Accuracy and response are exactly what you’d expect from Wacom, meaning there’s nothing to second-guess. What sets the Art Pen 2 apart, though, is the 360-degree barrel rotation, which picks up precisely how much and in which direction the pen shaft is turned.

For tools like calligraphy brushes or natural-media simulations, barrel rotation is genuinely transformative. It’s worth noting, though, that it’s also a fairly niche feature and not many drawing apps currently support it. Casual users probably won’t miss it at all. Where it resonates most is as an upgrade path for those who owned and relied on the original Art Pen before it was discontinued.

Compatibility is currently limited to a specific set of devices: the Wacom MovinkPad Pro 14, select Cintiq models (DTK168, DTK246, DTH246), and three Intuos Pro variants (PTK470, PTK670, and PTK870). Wacom has said that support for additional Pro Pen 3-enabled devices will be added over time, but for now, buyers should double-check their tablet is on the list before committing.

Sustainability

Like most professional accessories, the Art Pen 2 is plastic and metal, with nothing notably sustainable about the materials themselves. There’s no recycled content or eco-conscious material choice to speak of. Packaging tells a different story, though. What does count in the pen’s favor is Wacom’s track record for longevity. Value

The barrel rotation feature does limit the Art Pen 2’s broader appeal. Plenty of artists won’t need it, and for those users, there’s still a reasonable case for sticking with the more standard Pro Pen 3. If rotation has never factored into your workflow, the Art Pen 2’s most distinctive selling point simply won’t move the needle for you, and that’s worth being honest about.

That said, there’s a hidden value worth considering. At $99.95, the Art Pen 2 is $30 cheaper than the Pro Pen 3, with nearly identical core performance and barrel rotation on top. For those who prefer a thicker grip, it also sidesteps the added cost of official grip accessories. As a package, it makes considerably more financial sense than it first appears.

Verdict

The Wacom Art Pen 2 is a well-considered accessory for a specific type of creative. It doesn’t try to replace the Pro Pen 3, and it’s clearly not aimed at casual sketchers. What it offers is a combination of pro-level pressure sensitivity, a comfortable and distinctive grip, and a rotation feature that no competing pen at this price comes close to matching.

The limited compatibility list is a real constraint, and Wacom should address it sooner rather than later. But for those drawing on a supported device, particularly the MovinkPad Pro 14, the Art Pen 2 is a genuinely valuable add-on that earns its asking price without much argument. Especially at $99.95, it delivers a kind of brush-like expressiveness through barrel rotation that no standard pen, regardless of price, can replicate.

These MacOS-inspired flip flops are weird, playful, and sadly don’t come with Apple “Find My”

The mind of David Delahunty is something no LLM can capture. With the speed most marketing teams would be envious of, David churns out idea after idea on his Instagram, turning brands and visual icons into fun products that creatively challenge how you look at logos, shapes, and designs. We’ve covered a bunch before, including an MS Paint-inspired makeup kit, along with this Finder icon-inspired backpack. A recurring theme in Delahunty’s collection, the Finder icon ‘finds’ itself in a new avatar this time – interlocking flipflops.

A lot of his designs lean on heavy visual puns, which make for great eye-candy on Instagram, but on rare occasions they make for great products too! Delahunty’s made MacOS Finder-inspired necklaces (which you can still buy, btw), and it’s about time that these flipflops enter the production hall of fame too. They’re fairly uncomplicated, molded as a single-piece polyurethane flip-flop, with left and right units being blue and white respectively. And no, a Latina mother throwing these at a misbehaving child wouldn’t classify as ‘Airdrop’.

When Bill Hernandez and Steve Jobs designed the original Finder icon, I doubt they realized what meme material it possessed. The icon is innately memorable, but it’s also easily reproducible as different products – Delahunty’s flipflops are a great example. The icon is split into two, making it perfect to turn into flipflops, although that weird jagged central cut is a sort of unique challenge when it comes to wearability. However, with a fair amount of planning, it’s easy to account for the fact that the flipflops aren’t entirely bilaterally symmetrical. I guess that’s the beauty about them.

Each shoe is made the same way Crocs are – molded as a single piece with no interlocking, stitching, or gluing of extra parts. This makes each flipflop incredibly strong, fairly comfortable, and long-lasting. The flipflops in question come with cutouts that depict the Finder icon’s face too, which I think is a great idea because they serve as ventilation, so your footwear doesn’t smell like death because the polyurethane isn’t particularly breathable. The cutouts are great for airing the footwear out after a day at the beach too, although try not to get sand into them through the cuts – it’s no fun dealing with gritty shoes rubbing against your feet like literal sandpaper.

Delahunty’s mind works much faster than most people’s hands, so a lot of his ideas get mocked up using AI (it’s honestly one of the best examples of AI enhancing someone’s workflow). That being said, a lot of tweaking needs to be done before these shoes hit production. The Fortune Cookie Redesigned With Braille Is Pure Genius

Fortune cookies are one of those small rituals that carry more weight than they should. You crack it open, fish out the slip of paper, and read whatever odd little prophecy is inside. It’s silly, sure. But it’s also communal. The whole table does it. Everyone compares fortunes, laughs at the vague predictions, and tucks the good ones into their wallets for luck. It’s a shared moment disguised as a throwaway snack. And for visually impaired individuals, that moment stops at the crack of the shell.

Korean designer Hyerim Yoo’s response to that gap is Fortune Dot, a tactile device that lets visually impaired users independently read a daily fortune in Braille. But describing it that way undersells what makes it genuinely remarkable. Because Yoo didn’t just solve the accessibility problem. She solved it beautifully.

The object is shaped exactly like a fortune cookie. Same rounded form, same warm beige palette, same satisfying heft. A small translucent tab sticks out from the side, the only visual tell that this isn’t actually food. That tab is the “fortune paper,” a design detail so considered it almost makes you laugh. When you pull the two halves apart, the gesture mirrors breaking a real cookie open, and what you find inside is a refreshable Braille display with raised pin cells arranged in neat rows across a recessed panel. The message is there, waiting to be read with your fingertips, exactly as Yoo’s tagline describes it: today’s luck, felt at your fingertips.

The engineering inside is worth pausing on. The exploded views of the device reveal individual Braille cell modules, each capable of raising and lowering their pins to form different characters. It’s a compact, mechanical system tucked into something that looks like it belongs on a dessert plate. The bottom edge carries a USB-C port for charging, nearly invisible from the outside. The whole thing is small enough to drop into a pouch alongside a pair of AirPods and a lip balm, which is apparently exactly what Yoo intended.

What makes this design stand apart from most inclusive design projects, though, is the color system. Fortune Dot comes in three variants named Soft Bake, Signature Bake, and Dark Bake. The names follow the logic of actual cookie baking, and the colors range from a pale cream to a deep chocolate brown. It’s a playful, smart branding decision that does real work. It removes any clinical association from the product. It makes Fortune Dot feel like something you’d want to own and carry, not something assigned to you by necessity.

The branding extends outward into a full identity system. The Fortune Dot logo uses a dot-based pattern that quietly references Braille without spelling it out. It appears on a branded coffee cup in one of the campaign shots, wrapped in wired earbuds, Fortune Dot perched on top. That image alone communicates something most accessible product design never manages to: that this object belongs in the texture of everyday life, not apart from it.

The packaging holds up the same way. A light blue box lid features Braille text running across the top, the Fortune Dot wordmark sitting below it in clean type, and a cutout that reveals the cookie silhouette inside. When you lift the lid, the device sits nested in a cream interior, the translucent fortune tab pointing upward. It’s the kind of unboxing that feels like it was designed to be experienced by touch as much as by sight, which, of course, it was.

I’ve seen a lot of inclusive design work that gets the intention right but misses in execution, products that function well but feel set apart, designed for a category of user rather than a person. Fortune Dot doesn’t feel like that. It feels like something a designer fell genuinely in love with, in the best possible way, the kind of love that shows up in every detail, from the baking-level color names to the translucent paper tab to the way the hinges split open just so. That level of care is rare. When you see it, you notice.

Objects With Opinions: Ronen Kadushin’s Pieces

There are designers who make beautiful things, and then there are designers who make things that make you think. Ronen Kadushin belongs firmly in the second camp, and his latest collection, Pieces, is proof that a home accessory can be both genuinely useful and quietly subversive.

The collection consists of three objects: a candle holder called Echoes, a tealight holder called Reality TV, and a Piggybank. On paper, that sounds like a fairly ordinary lineup for a home accessories range. In practice, it’s anything but. The Pieces collection is an elegantly formed, humorously thought-provoking group of home accessories that highlight the tension between function and cultural narrative.

Designer: Ronen Kadushin

Each piece starts life as a flat sheet of laser-cut stainless steel, executed with Kadushin’s signature Twist-Hinge detail, making them easy and intuitive to bend by hand. They invite you to engage with the designs and co-create pieces that are an aesthetic statement with an edgy commentary. It’s a deliberate choice, not a shortcut. By asking you to participate in the assembly, Kadushin is making a point about who gets to be part of the creative process. You’re not just buying a finished object; you’re completing it.

That philosophy runs through everything he does. Kadushin is a pioneer of Open Design, freely sharing his designs to promote creativity, personal expression, and a positive social and economic impact. Kenji Abe’s ECHO is exactly that kind of object. It’s an analog speaker that amplifies smartphone audio simply by being set on top of the phone, requiring no power, no pairing, and no setup beyond placing it down. The concept takes its cues from wind instruments and seashells, two forms that have been shaping and projecting sound for centuries without the help of electricity.

The inside of ECHO works like a chamber, built to catch the phone’s audio and carry it outward in soft, diffused waves rather than projecting it directly. The geometry draws from the same logic as a cupped hand, but with more control over how sound travels. This Quebec Home Doesn’t Fight the Forest – It Disappears Into It

Certain kinds of architecture don’t announce themselves. La Maraude, the latest project by Nathalie Thibodeau Architecte, is exactly that — a compact residential dwelling tucked into the dense woodlands of Boileau, in Quebec’s Outaouais region, that earns its presence through restraint rather than spectacle. Completed in 2024, it’s one of the more quietly compelling houses to come out of Canada in recent memory.

The name itself carries meaning. ‘Maraude’ — to roam, to forage — hints at the relationship the house cultivates with its surroundings. Rather than claiming a dominant position along the river’s edge, the architects deliberately set the home deeper within the treeline, orienting the house’s interior life entirely toward the forest. It’s a gesture that shapes everything else about the project.

The design draws directly from Quebec’s vernacular architectural tradition — steeply pitched rooflines, grounded proportions, and a material palette that feels native to the region. The exterior is clad in natural cedar shingles and topped with a metal roof, two materials with deep roots in the local building culture. These aren’t nostalgic choices. They’re translated through a contemporary lens, stripped of ornament, reduced to their essential geometry. “Designed with particular attention to simplicity, functionality, and respect for traditional codes, La Maraude embodies a successful dialogue between contemporary architecture and local traditions,” says Nathalie Thibodeau Architecte.

What makes the spatial sequence genuinely interesting is the use of two courtyards as organizing devices. The plan doesn’t simply open to the outdoors — it pulls the forest in, fragmenting the landscape into a series of framed views that shift with the seasons. One courtyard faces north, more sheltered and partly enclosed by the building itself, oriented toward higher ground. The other faces south, brighter and more expansive, drawing the eye down toward the lower terrain. The result is a house that reads differently in every light condition, every month of the year.

The second volume, arranged over two levels in response to the site’s slope, plays a more introverted role. Openings here are smaller and precisely placed to frame specific moments within the tree canopy — quiet apertures rather than panoramic statements.

Photographed by Maxime Brouillet, La Maraude has the look of a project that will age well, both materially and culturally. It’s already being discussed as a potential anchor for a broader ensemble of small retreats on the site — a first building in what could become a considered, evolving conversation between architecture and landscape.

Phone Cases Are Boring, This One Puts a Living Terrarium Inside

Phone cases have largely settled into two camps: the ones that protect your phone without anyone noticing they exist, and the ones that make a statement with printed graphics, colors, or textures. Neither approach has found a way to make the back of a phone genuinely interesting rather than just decorated. Designer Daniel Idle found a third option that neither camp seems to have considered.

The Terrarium Phone Case is a clear resin case for the iPhone 16 Pro Max with an actual planted environment sealed inside the back cavity. Moss, small-leafed plants, and a stabilized soil substrate are embedded within the transparent shell, creating a thin cross-section of living terrain that you carry around with you wherever the phone goes. It’s a working phone case, a functional terrarium, and an oddly calming thing to have in your pocket all at once.

The construction involved 3D modeling and fabrication in clear resin, producing a case with enough depth in the back wall to house soil, roots, and plant matter. The plants are packed using a stabilized substrate that keeps the arrangement intact when the phone is picked up, rotated, tilted, or slipped into a bag. The camera cutout is fully preserved; the charging port at the bottom remains accessible; the phone continues to work exactly as it always did.

What keeps everything alive inside the sealed cavity is a closed-loop moisture system. The plants and soil generate humidity, which evaporates toward the inner surface of the resin, condenses back into droplets, and cycles down again. Light passing through the clear shell feeds the plants from outside, while the substrate provides gradual nutrient release. The whole thing is, in a fairly literal sense, a miniature ecosystem that sustains itself without any intervention from the person carrying it.

The condensation that forms on the inside of the shell during high-humidity moments is part of the visual appeal rather than a flaw to be engineered away. Seeing that vapor cycle through the case is a reminder that something in there is alive, actively breathing and responding to its environment, in the same pocket or bag as a device specifically engineered to minimize all biological interference.

There’s a running thread through design culture about bringing nature back into objects and spaces that have drifted too far from it. Biophilic design has become a recognizable term for everything from moss walls in offices to plant-filled shelving in apartments. Most of those applications treat plants as decoration layered on top of an existing design. Idle’s approach is different because the plant system isn’t decoration; it’s structural, sealed directly into the object’s body as a core component rather than an afterthought.

Of course, there will be some reservations about putting moisture and soil so close to your phone, which might be resistant to water and dust, but only from brief encounters. Good thing, then, that it’s still a concept project right now. But as a thought experiment about what a phone case could reasonably contain, it lands somewhere between genuinely novel and gently absurd, which is probably the most honest place for a good idea to start.

Inside, the sloping terrain accommodates a lower-level wellness zone with sauna and relaxation spaces, while mechanical functions remain discreetly tucked away. The result is a timeless mountain dwelling that balances sustainability, performance, and contextual sensitivity.

5. The Essential Cabin Design

The cabin remains the original archetype of mountain living, now reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. From classic A-frames to refined log structures, today’s cabins celebrate essentialism or a return to clarity, function, and honest materials. Designs emphasize compact footprints, efficient layouts, and craftsmanship that prioritizes durability over ornamentation.

At the heart of the cabin is simplicity with purpose. A central hearth anchors the space, natural textures create warmth, and every element serves a role. The aesthetic is unpretentious yet deeply intentional, fostering a direct connection to the surrounding forest. This modernized cabin embodies an off-grid spirit, where minimalism meets comfort and quiet retreat.

The mountain-edge cabin designed by Jorge Luis Veliz Quintana is defined by its organic geometry and strong contextual integration. Each 150 sqm unit adopts a cocoon-like form, positioned directly on large natural boulders to minimize ground intervention. The structural system combines curved timber lattices with concrete platforms that mirror the grey tonalities of the surrounding cliffs. This deliberate material, color, and finish strategy allows the architecture to visually dissolve into the rocky terrain. The sculptural envelope extends outward to form a generous terrace, reinforcing the linear relationship between interior spaces and the expansive mountain views.

The layout is organized across two levels, responding to both topography and climate. An open-plan upper floor accommodates the bedroom and bathroom, oriented to maximize 360-degree panoramas through continuous glazing. A secondary semi-outdoor level enhances cross-ventilation and environmental responsiveness. The project was developed digitally using SketchUp for three-dimensional modelling, Lumion for rendering and environmental simulation, and Photoshop for final visual refinement, ensuring precision in form, texture, and lighting.

UNO and Vrbo Are Renting Vacation Homes for $4 a Night

Brand collaborations are everywhere these days, but every once in a while, one lands so perfectly that you have to stop and appreciate the logic behind it. The UNO x Vrbo partnership is exactly that kind of collab. Not because it’s flashy or trying to be something it’s not, but because it genuinely makes sense.

Starting May 15, Mattel and Vrbo are opening bookings for six limited-time vacation home stays built entirely around the spirit of game night. Six properties across the U.S., two tiers of experience, and one very clever price point: $4 per night. That last part is a deliberate nod to UNO’s iconic Draw 4 card (which can make or break relationships), and it’s the kind of detail that makes you smile whether you’re a brand person or not.

Designers: UNO x Vrbo

The stays are divided into two experiences. At the top end sit the two “Wild Card” homes, located in the Hollywood Hills and Texas Hill Country. These are the full production: UNO-themed décor, organized game nights, and an in-home dining experience. They’re designed for groups of up to 10 guests who want the whole immersive package, the kind of weekend that’s more curated getaway than casual vacation. Then there are the four “Play It Your Way” stays in Winter Park, Colorado; Palm Desert, California; Panama City Beach, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia. These are a little more relaxed, but still come with a co-branded UNO x Vrbo Welcome Kit, a game room, and either a pool or hot tub. Essentially, they’re the version for people who want the fun without the fuss. All six properties are bookable for one three-night stay, Friday to Monday, on a first-come, first-served basis. Bookings open May 15 at 1 PM ET. I’ll be honest: at $4 a night, they are going to go fast.

What makes this collaboration genuinely interesting, beyond the price tag, is the attention that went into the actual product. A custom UNO deck was commissioned for this collab, illustrated by Pietari Posti, with artwork inspired by travel destinations and vacation themes. It also comes with an exclusive rule called the “Vacation Rental Swap,” which lets players swap hands with anyone at the table. It’s a small thing, but it shows that the two brands weren’t just slapping logos on a vacation home and calling it a day. They put real creative thought into what the collaboration could actually feel like to experience.

That’s the part that tends to separate a genuinely good brand collab from a lazy one. Anyone can license a logo and stick it on merchandise. Fewer brands take the time to ask what the experience should feel like from the inside, and build something around that answer. UNO, at its core, is a game about chaos and connection. You play it with people you like and you inevitably end up yelling at them. It’s social in the most fundamental way. Vrbo, meanwhile, is about giving groups a private space to actually be together without the interruptions of a hotel. Put those two things in the same room and you get something that doesn’t need to be explained.

It also helps that this collab is part of a growing relationship between Mattel and Expedia Group, Vrbo’s parent company. Mattel already appeared in an Expedia Super Bowl commercial earlier this year through the Barbie universe. So this isn’t a one-off stunt; it reads more like two brands actively figuring out how to build something together over time. For anyone who grew up playing UNO at a kitchen table, there’s an undeniable nostalgia pull here. But the campaign doesn’t lean into nostalgia as a crutch. It uses the game’s identity as a starting point and builds forward from it, which is ultimately why it works. The best collaborations don’t just remind you of something you loved. They give you a new reason to love it again.

Fighter pilots have had heads-up displays since the 1950s, because asking a human to look down at instruments while traveling at 600 miles per hour and making life-or-death decisions is an engineering failure, not a pilot failure. The technology migrated to production cars in 1988 when GM offered the first automotive HUD in the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, and every generation of premium vehicle design since has treated it as table stakes. Tesla rewrote so many conventions of the automobile that it’s easy to forget it left one important capability behind. For all the innovation packed into the Model 3 and Model Y, their dashboards direct critical driving data to a screen mounted nowhere near where human eyes naturally rest during forward motion. TrantorVision built NeuroHUD to close that gap, and the Kickstarter campaign funded in 30 minutes.

Built alongside a community of over 4,000 Tesla owners from mid-2025 through early 2026, NeuroHUD projects Tesla driving data directly into the driver’s forward sightline rather than leaving it on a screen at center console height. Installation takes about one minute, requires no tools and no disassembly, and leaves the factory wiring completely untouched, keeping the manufacturer’s warranty intact. The compute module clips behind Tesla’s center screen and draws power through a single USB-C cable, with no hardwired connections and no vehicle modifications of any kind. A pair of 150-degree AI fisheye cameras face Tesla’s display and read high-frequency data like speed at 50 Hz, fast enough to keep the HUD readout synchronized with the car’s actual state without perceptible lag at any velocity. Lower-frequency information, covering gear position, battery range, and navigation turns, arrives through the Tesla API on a separate channel, and the system routes each data type through the appropriate pipeline based on how quickly it needs to update. End-to-end latency on the AI vision side sits as low as 20 milliseconds, tighter than many production-fitted HUDs achieve through direct hardware integration. The onboard processor is a 6-core Arm DynamIQ chip paired with an Arm Mali G610 MP4 GPU and 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, running Ubuntu Core Linux with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity. That compute specification would look comfortable in a mid-range Android tablet, which gives a sense of how much processing headroom TrantorVision has reserved for future OTA feature additions.

At 1,500 nits of peak brightness, NeuroHUD’s 4-inch TFT LCD panel is engineered specifically around the failure mode that sinks most aftermarket HUDs in real-world use: direct sunlight washout. The panel runs at 480×800 resolution with a 140-degree viewing angle, keeping displayed information legible across a wide range of driver head positions without requiring precise alignment to a narrow sweet spot. The modular Light Engine gives drivers a genuine choice of projection method rather than committing them to a single approach. Combiner Mode positions a semi-transparent screen in the driver’s sightline for the sharpest image quality, with projected information appearing to float in the forward visual field at a focal distance that keeps eyes aimed naturally at the road. Windshield Projection Mode throws the image directly onto the glass for a more immersive overlay, and both modes switch without tools or any hardware intervention.

HomeControl is a GPS-triggered garage automation system that learns the driver’s RF remote signal, geolocates the home driveway, and fires the garage door automatically as the car turns in, with a physical button for manual override available at any time. Screen Mirroring turns the HUD into a secondary phone display, meaning Google Maps or Waze can be projected directly onto the combiner or windshield without any dependency on Tesla’s native navigation system. UI customization runs three levels deep: a mobile app for toggling individual elements, a full UI editor for precise sizing and positioning of each data element, and an open API interface for users who want to build a custom renderer entirely from scratch. A community layer lets drivers share layouts or download configurations built by other NeuroHUD owners worldwide, making the display experience as much a living software product as a hardware one. The combination of GPS automation, open API access, and a community-driven layout library gives NeuroHUD a software depth that compounds as its user base grows.

TrantorVision began the project in January 2025 with the goal of building a heads-up display designed around Tesla’s unique display architecture from the ground up. By May 2025 an engineering prototype was assembled and the AI vision system validated through real-world road testing; by July the product was publicly announced with a community already exceeding 4,000 Tesla owners across multiple platforms. Production design locked in December 2025, with the first batch of production samples arriving in January 2026. The device supports Model 3 from 2017 to 2023, Model Y from 2020 to 2025, Model 3 Highland from 2023 onward, Model Y Juniper from 2025 onward, and the Cybertruck from 2023 onward, covering both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive configurations with Model 3/Y Standard trim included. An OTA Compatibility Upgrade Service is built in, meaning the hardware is designed to receive future software capabilities without requiring a new unit.

The standard NeuroHUD carries an early bird price of $379 against a retail MSRP of $629, covering Tesla data integration, mobile app control, UI community access, the custom UI editor, screen mirroring, and CarPlay and Android Auto support. The NeuroHUD Pro steps to $429 at early bird pricing, down from $729 retail, adding HomeControl, Windshield Projection Mode, deeper Tesla API integration, and enhanced hardware built to grow its feature set through over-the-air updates. Starbucks built a Yeti cooler for your Venti Iced Lattes, but you can’t buy one yet

You know what’s ‘vertical integration’? Starbucks building its own cooler box for its own beverages. Meet the Yeti-alternative that’s designed not for your Budweisers, but for your venti iced lattes. It’s called the Starbucks Ice Box, and while it looks perfect from top to bottom, it has one problem: it’s only available in South Korea.

The design is deceptively simple but gets every detail right. Four individual cup slots keep drinks stable and separated, eliminating the float-and-tip chaos that happens when you throw tall cups into a standard cooler. A dedicated ice compartment sits at the bottom, isolated from the drinks themselves so you’re not fishing cups out of melted ice water an hour later. The domed lid has ventilation slots that allow air circulation without sacrificing insulation, and those side latches look substantial enough to actually keep everything secure when you hit a pothole. It’s wrapped in Starbucks’ forest green colorway, compact enough to fit behind a car seat or in a trunk corner, and clearly designed by people who have done the group coffee run enough times to know exactly where the pain points are. The proportions feel right in a way that general-purpose coolers never quite nail when you’re dealing with tall, narrow vessels.

This isn’t Starbucks’ first merch attempt. They’ve consistently pushed out loads of accessories over the years, mostly in eastern markets (like these TWS earbuds in collaboration with Samsung, and these $28 retro cameras that they debuted in China) although this one feels way more purposeful than any of their other launches. It’s something people will buy and use for years, rather than becoming just another collectible, and you know that if someone’s buying a Starbucks cooler, they’re a customer for life. Vertical integration for the win!

The design is as simple as it gets. The insulated walls keep the insides whatever temperature you want. Although built for iced drinks, you can put your hot beverages in too and have them piping even after hours. For iced drinks, you can also add ice packs into the cooler to chill them down further – just be careful they don’t drip or the cups could get soggy. A lift-out tray holds four venti drinks, because if you’re the kind to drink regulars, you probably wouldn’t be keeping them for hours. The clamp-lid ensures everything is locked in tight, and a Starbucks-branded handle sits flush against the top, giving the entire thing a gorgeously monolithic design.

The only place you can grab this right now is on obscure sites online. A Japanese website has it listed for ¥26,530 or $169 USD, not including shipping. If anyone in Starbucks’ global team is reading this, consider it your sign to manufacture this for the American and European audiences too, trust me, your annual turnover will thank you!

Your Knife Block Has No Business Looking This Good

Most kitchen accessories come with an unspoken agreement: you accept that they look utilitarian, and in return, they do their job quietly in the background. Knife holders, in particular, have always been the least glamorous residents of the countertop. The wooden block is fine. The magnetic wall strip is practical. But neither has ever made anyone stop and stare. Samyuktha S’s Eclipse Edge concept breaks that agreement entirely, and I’m genuinely glad it does.

The Eclipse Edge is a magnetic knife holder inspired by the geometry of a lunar eclipse, specifically the moment when Earth aligns between the sun and moon, casting that iconic half-shadow silhouette into the sky. That form, an abstracted arc built from layered, concentric half-circles, becomes the entire design language here. Looking at it on a countertop, you wouldn’t immediately guess what it does. You’d probably assume it was a sculpture. That confusion is precisely the point.

Designer: Samyuktha S

Samyuktha’s design brief was direct: create a kitchen storage accessory that bridges functional utility and structural statement decor. The goal was to reimagine a standard tool organizer as a decorative landmark within the home, elevating it to a high-end sculptural piece. She achieved this without resorting to the usual tricks of adding color or unconventional materials. The Eclipse Edge is sand-casted aluminum with a hand-carved finish, and it leans entirely into that material’s dual nature: raw and refined at the same time.

The mechanics are equally considered. Hidden magnetic sheets inside the form hold knives parallel to the surface, which means blades are secured safely without any visible hardware or slots cutting into that clean silhouette. The oil and waterproof protective layering is built into the construction. Multiple knife sizes are accommodated without compromising the holder’s structural integrity or visual lines. It’s the kind of detail work that separates a pretty sketch from a design that actually holds up under scrutiny.

The ideation pages on Samyuktha’s Behance project tell you a lot. There are dozens of iterations, circular forms, crescent variations, abstracted lunar shapes explored and discarded before arriving at the stacked arch that became the final concept. Getting from a celestial reference to something that can hold a chef’s knife at the right angle and still look like contemporary sculpture takes a specific kind of problem-solving patience. The sketches make clear that nothing was accidental.

A physical prototype was also produced through aluminum sand casting using an MDF pattern, which means this design was tested in the real world, not just rendered beautifully and left to live on a screen. Seeing the actual object in photos alongside actual kitchen knives brings the concept into sharp focus. It looks grounded and serious in person, the kind of object that would hold its own on any well-styled countertop without asking for too much attention.

I do think about the practical day-to-day reality of owning something like this. Keeping polished aluminum pristine in a working kitchen takes effort, and the hand-carved finish, while gorgeous, would need care. But that’s not necessarily a flaw in the design. High-end kitchen objects have always required a little more commitment. A copper pot needs polishing. A cast iron pan needs seasoning. The Eclipse Edge feels like it belongs in that same category of objects you choose deliberately and tend to over time.

The broader conversation around kitchenware has been shifting for a while now. People increasingly want their kitchen tools to reflect how they live and what they care about, not just what they cook. The Eclipse Edge speaks to that shift with real confidence. It doesn’t apologize for being beautiful. It doesn’t hide its utility behind a costume. It just quietly insists that a knife holder can be, at the same time, an object worth looking at. Samyuktha S’s Eclipse Edge is a concept for now, but it’s the kind of concept that feels ready. The thinking is there. The craft is there. The prototype is there. Sometimes the only thing standing between a student project and a product is someone willing to bet on it.
