It’s a simple, durable, pocket-friendly cylinder that most of us carry without a second thought, right up until the moment we actually need it. Its form is so familiar that we rarely stop to question its potential as anything other than a writing instrument. But what if the pen’s silhouette was actually the perfect chassis for something far more ambitious? What if its main job wasn’t to record problems, but to solve them?

TiMate, the Redwood City-based EDC team behind the BoltLite and CoreLite, spent three design generations building toward exactly this: a Grade 5 titanium pen organized around a four-step repair workflow of illuminating, marking, cutting, and repairing. The body is CNC-machined, IPX-8 waterproof, and houses a detachable flashlight, a three-slot magnetic toolbox, a dual-tip marking system, and a utility blade, all in a 60-gram, 5.31-inch frame. The flashlight module runs a Cree XPG4 LED at a neutral 5000K color temperature with 70+ CRI, which is the difference between reading a wire’s color accurately and just guessing. Three modes cover the range: 9 lumens for close inspection, 150 lumens for repairs and outdoor use, and a strobe for emergencies. IPX-8 waterproof, it charges over USB-C in 40 minutes, running 12 hours on low from a 100mAh lithium cell. The module detaches completely from the pen body via a magnetic joint rated at 3.8 kilograms, redesigned after users flagged the earlier version as too loose. Clip it standalone to a carabiner, rotate the dual-direction clip to aim the beam, or separate it so both hands are free for the repair.

Previous TiMate pens dedicated this midsection to a fixed blade; the VeroLite converts it into a three-slot magnetic platform for standard 4mm screwdriver bits. The body is CNC-machined Grade 5 titanium, 134.9mm long and 14.6mm wide, available in Titanium Gray (sandblasted matte) and Tactical Black (PVD-coated, scratch-resistant). At 60 grams, it’s 15% lighter than the CoreLite, a change driven directly by user feedback about hand fatigue. A recessed contour at the grip zone gives your fingers a natural landing spot, so it feels like a tool rather than a tube. Both finishes share the same machining process, so structural quality is identical. A leather sleeve option swaps the clip for a cleaner desk-carry profile.

3D-Printed Ukulele Transforms Into an Electric Guitar In Just 2 Seconds

Every kid who grew up watching cars turn into robots has a soft spot for things that are not what they seem. Musician and maker Mattias Krantz never quite grew out of that phase, except instead of turning a truck into Optimus Prime, he set his sights on something smaller and arguably harder to pull off without CGI. He wanted a ukulele that could become a full size guitar on command, without falling apart in his hands. That meant solving three problems at once: growing the neck by roughly ten inches, keeping the strings in tune through that change, and expanding the body into a real guitar shape instead of a symmetrical blob. Each one turned out to be its own small nightmare.

The motivation was refreshingly petty. Ukulele players get less respect than guitar players no matter how good they get, and Krantz wanted to flip that on its head. Getting there took months of failed prototypes and a collaboration with mechanical engineer Adam Damato, who stepped in once the physics of a growing, string bearing neck got too gnarly to solve alone. What began as a joke became a real feat of mechanical design, borrowing tricks from telescoping tools, fishing reels, and an obscure folk instrument. By the end, the ukulele fit in a backpack and unfolded into a stage ready guitar in seconds.

The neck telescopes straight out of the ukulele’s tiny frame, sliding one section into the next until it locks at full guitar length, gaining roughly ten inches without ever detaching from the body. A steel core runs through the sliding sections, and the joints are cut so they interlock and brace against each other the instant the neck reaches full extension. That bracing is what lets it survive eighty pounds of string tension without bowing like a fishing rod. Getting there took two failed attempts first. A folding neck, borrowed from an old instrument called the cithara orbo, worked fine on a full size guitar but was useless on a ukulele, since half a neck sat exactly where a hand needed to grip. The telescoping version solved the length problem right away, but only stopped bending once Damato worked in the steel core and reinforced joints.

The strings are custom made, roughly twice the length of a normal set, and thread onto strategically placed rollers hidden inside the neck and body. Pull the neck out and the rollers feed slack forward, push it back in and they wind the excess back up, so the same six strings carry the instrument through both tunings without coming off. That roller system only exists because everything simpler failed first. Rubber bands solved the stretch problem but sounded worse than the ukulele they replaced. A fishing reel style rig using rope worked until the rope itself stretched, turning every transformation into tuning roulette, and swapping in non stretch rope traded that for a rope that kept snapping, once badly enough to take the guitar apart. Custom strings, ordered special and worth a twenty day wait, were the fix that finally held.

The body expands through six independently moving panels that fan outward from the ukulele’s compact shell, each one traveling a different distance and angle so the outline settles into a real guitar’s curves instead of a bloated circle. An early version of that mechanism grew symmetrically in every direction, fine for something like a banjo but wrong for an instrument with a pinched waist. Getting six panels to move independently instead of in lockstep turned one mechanical problem into six. The first panel alone took three attempts before it worked reliably, and even then only about ninety percent of the time. Adding the rest of the panels made things worse, since a hub inside was quietly blocking outward movement and jamming the whole assembly. Swapping plastic components for metal fixed it, and two days assembling hundreds of parts produced a body that finally held its shape.

None of this would matter if the transformation felt gimmicky in person, but the reception says otherwise. Onlookers at Krantz’s street performances wrote it off as just another ukulele until it unfolded mid song and changed their opinion of him. A band let him bring it on stage, and the transformation held together well enough to draw applause rather than confusion. Transforming gadgets are nothing new, but the engineering here, steel joints, custom rollers, six moving panels, earns real attention over a gimmick label. Krantz and Damato spent months on problems most builders would abandon, and the payoff works under tension, every time.

Insta360’s foldable drone patent targets DJI Neo 2 at sub-250g

Insta360 built its reputation on cameras that see in every direction at once. It’s literally in their name. The X series made 360-degree capture accessible; the Luna Ultra brought Leica optics to a handheld gimbal. Flying something, though, is a different category of challenge, and the patent images that appeared in July 2026 show the company working through what a foldable drone looks like with Insta360 DNA. The illustrated design at the bottom shows folding arms, a ring-shaped propeller guard, and a dedicated locking mechanism, a form factor that prioritizes the moment of packing away just as much as the moment of takeoff.

DJI’s Neo 2 has the casual drone segment largely to itself in the sub-250g category, with a rigid one-piece frame and a 19-minute flight time that have made it a reliable default for creators who want aerial footage without the complexity of a serious drone setup. Insta360 entering that space would break what has effectively been a two-player market, with Zero Zero Robotics’ HoverAir as the only real alternative. The folding design alone gives Insta360 a structural argument against the Neo 2; a potential 360-degree camera, if it materializes, would give it a creative one. What a wonderful year for foldables, eh? We’re expecting a folding iPhone in September, and Insta360 might give us a folding drone too!

This isn’t just some forum rumor, either. The patent images (from patent file CN223865117U), which started making the rounds on July 16th and were highlighted by outlets like Tech Court, are pretty specific. They show a drone body with the “Insta360” logo stamped on it, with fully folding arms that tuck into the chassis and a distinctive ring-shaped guard protecting the propellers. There’s even a dedicated locking mechanism detailed, which tells you just how seriously they’re taking the whole “fold-and-go” concept. This is a design that screams it was made to be stuffed into a pocket, not carefully placed in a bespoke case.

But here’s the thing: this isn’t Insta360’s first aerial rodeo. Before they decided to put their own name on a drone, they sent in a scout team under the sub-brand Antigravity. The A1 drone they launched was, frankly, a bit of a monster: a sub-249g drone with a wild dual-lens setup that shot 8K 360-degree video and made the drone itself invisible in the footage. It was a spec-sheet beast and a clear shot across DJI’s bow, proving Insta360 had the engineering chops to compete in the sky. It was their way of testing the waters.

Now, it looks like they’re done testing. This new patent is the second, more direct shot. And here’s the kicker: for a company obsessed with 360-degree video, the patent images don’t show a fisheye lens. At all. It’s a huge question mark hanging over the whole project. Are they hiding the tech, or are they planning to launch a drone that, for the first time, doesn’t have their signature feature? If they’re aiming for a rumored sub-$200 price point, leaving the 360 camera on the cutting room floor might be the only way to get there. It’s a move that would be both shocking and, in a weird way, perfectly logical.

You also can’t forget that this is all happening while the two companies are actively suing each other in China. This isn’t friendly competition; it’s a full-blown hardware rivalry. Insta360 came for DJI’s gimbals, tested the drone market with a sub-brand, and is now preparing a direct assault on DJI’s most accessible drone. With a release window expected somewhere between late 2026 and early 2027, we’re not just watching a new product being born. We’re watching the next chapter in a tech soap opera, and it’s about to get very, very interesting.

Stanley doesn’t make gym equipment… but this stylish kettlebell proves it should

Fill a Stanley tumbler with a yogurt-based smoothie from bottom to top and you actually end up getting an arm workout. A 40oz Stanley cup can weigh close to 4lbs or upwards of 1.5 kilograms if filled to the brim with something dense like a smoothie or a thick latte. Jane Morelli just decided that if she was gonna give her arms a workout, why simultaneously rely on ugly looking kettlebells? Morelli superimposed Stanley’s design language onto kettlebells and the result looks just gorgeous.

Every gym equipment I’ve used has looked boringly functional. The kettlebells at my gym come in bright colors, but that’s just a color-code so you know the difference between a lighter and a heavier kettlebell even if the number on it wears off (it almost always does). Morelli’s design merely bridges two worlds together, and I won’t lie – the results look like the most seamless collab ever imagined. My only gripe is, I wish these kettlebells were actually tumblers too!

Haute gym equipment might not be a category but these kettlebells definitely make a case for it. Each one is styled with chic curves, and a color palette I’d only expect from companies like Hermès or Stanley. Subtle pastel shades, punctuated by just one hot pink color for the yoga-moms who need their gym equipment to be as flashy as their gym outfits. Each kettlebell has a lacquer-like sheen on it, along with the Stanley logo emblazoned on the front, larger than the weight units below it because that’s what matters more. The style statement.

I get that I can sound a little ironic, but I’m all for brand crossovers. (The only time I really object is when Tesla does stuff like manufacturing vodka or whistles because they seem to be obsessed with side quests and not really making any cars). This one piques my fancy because Stanley isn’t just a social statement, it’s perfect for fitness-freaks too who love chugging protein shakes from their 30-40oz cups, or sharing Strava stats superimposed against their Stanley cups just to paint a picture of how much ‘aura’ they have.

Morelli’s done a pretty remarkable job of simply yet effectively distilling Stanley’s brand language onto a piece of gym equipment, without necessarily caricaturing the Stanley cup’s silhouette. The kettlebells have a separate, distinct character, and the dual-band colors on each individual kettlebell represents a palette that feels distinctly high-fashion yet accessible. Quite like the company’s big, beautiful, nearly indestructible tumblers.

Rolls-Royce Firmament Concept Turns the Hood Into a Meteor Shower Chasing the Spirit of Ecstasy

Every shooting star you have ever wished on was actually dying. What looks like a streak of pure light tearing across the sky is a rock disintegrating, burning up in its final seconds, and yet we treat that death as a gift, a wish granted. Stars carry the same contradiction. The calcium in your bones and the iron in your blood were forged inside a star that had to die violently to scatter those elements across the universe. Creation and destruction run on the same fuel line, not as metaphor but as literal astrophysics. French design student Gaspard Deveugle built an entire Rolls-Royce concept around that exact paradox.

Called Firmament, the concept deletes the vertical Pantheon grille that has anchored every Rolls-Royce face for a century. A low, pointed nose takes its place, tapering to a blade like a ship’s hull. Streaks of light rain across the hood and glass roof, dense near the windshield and scattering into faint dust toward the tip, the way a meteor burns brightest right before it disappears. The pattern converges on the Spirit of Ecstasy, as if she is the one point catching everything falling from the sky. It is the loudest thing on the car, and everything else has been quieted to let it read clearly.

Deveugle is a 3D design student based in Valenciennes, France, with internship experience across BMW, Kingfisher, and RealNum, and Firmament sits inside a portfolio built almost entirely on reinterpreting storied marques. He has rendered a Bentley Speed 8 tribute, sketched a Bugatti Type 52, built cafe racer studies off Harley Davidson and Moto Guzzi platforms, and designed a yacht concept called Arcane. Firmament arrives as an internship project rather than a factory commission, posted on Behance alongside a companion breakdown of the sketch and modeling process behind it. That distinction matters here. Nobody at Goodwood signed off on deleting the grille, which frees the concept to treat Rolls-Royce’s most sacred design element as raw material rather than untouchable heritage.

Rolls-Royce has already flirted with turning night sky into physical form, just never on the outside of the car. The Ghost introduced its fiber-optic Starlight headliner in 2014, a swath of black leather stitched with over a thousand tiny points of light, and Spectre pushed that further with more than five thousand illuminated points woven into the dashboard fascia. Both live entirely inside the cabin, visible only to whoever paid for the seat. Firmament takes that same instinct and turns it inside out, moving the starfield from the headliner to the hood where anyone on the street can see it. That single move reframes a private luxury detail as the entire visual identity of the car.

The mood board Deveugle built around the idea, titled Power of Duality, leans on real astrophysics rather than loose poetry. Stars manufacture heavy elements inside their cores through nucleosynthesis, then have to die violently to scatter that material across the universe, meaning creation and destruction share the same fuel line by necessity, not metaphor. His reference imagery pairs a comet’s frozen tail with a supernova’s radial burst and a single meteor reflected over open water, the visual grammar he then translated onto sheet metal. That grounding shows in how the streak pattern behaves on the car itself. It thickens where energy would concentrate and thins where it would dissipate, following a logic borrowed from physics rather than instinct.

The rest of the surfacing supports that reading without competing for attention. A raised black spine splits the rear deck into twin fenders that taper to points, a quiet nod to Rolls-Royce’s own boat-tail coachbuilding, though it plays a supporting role here rather than the headline. Dark, turbine bladed wheels replace the static hubcaps Rolls-Royce is known for, hardware that stays upright on its axle no matter how fast the wheel spins, trading serenity for something closer to a hypercar’s stance. There are no visible door handles or shutlines anywhere in the renders, just one continuous poured surface running from nose to tail. Every panel gap that would normally interrupt a Rolls-Royce silhouette has been resolved into a single, unbroken skin.

None of this is destined for Goodwood’s production line, and that is fine. Firmament works precisely because it is unburdened by the things a real Rolls-Royce has to solve, crash structures, pedestrian safety, a grille that still needs to cool something even on an EV. What it offers instead is a sharp piece of brand thinking from a student still building his portfolio, taking a hundred-year-old grille and a hood ornament everyone stopped truly looking at and making both feel dangerous again. Rolls-Royce spends real engineering effort making its cars feel weightless and silent. Deveugle’s answer is to make one look like it just survived a meteor storm, closer to what the Spirit of Ecstasy was always chasing.

“Adaptive Reuse” Housing in NYC Reshapes Aging Brick Superblock Into An Interconnected Society

Cities have gotten very good at stacking people on top of each other and very bad at getting those people to actually interact. High density housing solves a real estate problem while quietly creating a social one, isolating seniors on one floor and young families on another with nothing but an elevator connecting them. Architect Yi Lu looked at this fragmentation and asked what it would take to reverse it without bulldozing the buildings already holding millions of people. Her answer, submitted to the A’ Design Award, treats an aging superblock not as a liability but as raw material for a new kind of social infrastructure. It is ambitious, a little sculptural, and grounded in something most housing renewal proposals ignore entirely.

The project, titled The Intergenerational Commons, targets Stuyvesant Town, New York City’s massive postwar housing development, as its test case. Lu’s proposal keeps roughly 75 to 85 percent of the existing floor area as housing while converting the rest into a revitalized podium, rooftop kindergartens, and a network of terraces threading through the brick shell. The renderings have a strange, compelling silhouette to them, cylindrical brick towers twisting up past staggered floor plates, like Michel de Klerk got handed Frank Gehry’s sketchbook. A horizontal community spine activates street level life, while stairs, lifts, and terraces stitch the floors together into what Lu describes as a continuous social landscape. The result looks sculptural from the outside and feels intentional from within, which is a harder balance to strike than either quality on its own.

Stuyvesant Town was built as postwar efficiency housing, rows of near identical brick towers designed to move people through the city’s housing shortage as fast as possible. That efficiency came at the cost of any real social texture, and decades later the superblock reads as functional but flat, a place people live rather than a place people encounter each other. Lu’s retrofit does not fight that brick language so much as bend it, pulling curved, tower-like volumes out of the existing grid and letting them collide at odd angles. Load-bearing steel reinforcement and reversible insertions allow the new geometry to sit on top of the old structure without gutting it. The brick stays, but its logic changes completely, from repetition to rupture.

A standardized kit of parts, built around 3,600 millimeter modular bays and lightweight steel framing, lets construction happen in phases without displacing current residents, a constraint that kills most ambitious renewal proposals before they leave the page. Bolt on terraces extend outward from the existing brick shell, adding outdoor space that the original superblock never had. A 1,200 square meter community hub anchors street level activity, while stacked shared terraces and a 300 millimeter green roof system carry that social infrastructure upward through the building. None of it requires the wholesale demolition that usually accompanies large scale housing renewal.

The interesting part is how Lu orchestrates ‘intergenerational’ overlapping zones, connecting seniors and children rather than the more common strategy of designating separate zones for each. Rooftop kindergartens sit close enough to senior learning spaces on the revitalized podium that informal encounters happen without anyone having to schedule them. Interaction stays optional throughout, preserving privacy for residents who want it while making mutual support available for those who do not. That flexibility separates the proposal from the well-meaning but rigid intergenerational housing models that came before it. Whether a project this structurally ambitious ever gets built at Stuyvesant Town is a separate question from whether it should, and Lu’s entry makes a genuinely compelling case for the second one.

Forget Smart Homes, Moooi Is Designing Homes That Feel Alive

Light moves through trees. Shadows stretch and shrink. No two afternoons ever look quite the same. Moooi wants your living room to borrow that same restlessness. In a conversation with Yanko Design, the Dutch design house laid out a vision for interiors that respond to time, mood and the people living inside them, rather than staying frozen in one fixed arrangement from the day they’re installed.

It is a strange kind of ambition for a furniture brand to have. Strange but brilliant. Moooi has spent 25 years refusing to make boring things, and its next chapter looks less like a product catalog and more like a philosophy for how homes should feel. Not smarter. Not more automated. Just more alive, in the same unpredictable way the outside world already is.

The concept has a name, The Living Room, and it started as a simple question the brand kept circling back to. What if an interior never sat still, but moved through a day the way the world outside a window does, gradually and without announcing itself. Lighting could soften as morning turns to afternoon. Objects could shift subtly in response to who’s in the room and what they’re doing. Nothing about it reads as gimmick or gadgetry, which is deliberate, since Moooi keeps insisting this has nothing to do with sensors or automation. It reads instead like weather indoors, a mood that drifts rather than a setting you toggle. That distinction matters more than it sounds.

Atmosphere has subtly become the real product Moooi sells, and everything else follows from it. The brand says its process now starts with a single question, how do people want to feel the moment they walk in, long before anyone picks a fabric or a finish. That thinking explains why Moooi’s catalog has crept well past furniture and lighting into wallcoverings, carpets, ceramic tiles and even bespoke scent. Each addition exists to thicken the sensory layer of a room rather than decorate its surface. Building a mood board was never the goal. Building an entire world was.

Personalization is where the philosophy stops being poetic and starts getting genuinely strange, in the best sense. Moooi’s collaboration with EveryHuman uses AI to translate a person’s mood into a custom room fragrance, treating scent as another material a designer can shape rather than an afterthought sprayed in before guests arrive. That same instinct extends to digitally printed carpets and layered surfaces built around individual taste instead of a single house style. The brand frames this as giving creative tools to people rather than finished products, which flips the usual furniture relationship on its head. You are not buying a chair here. You are being handed the freedom to keep shaping a space as your own taste evolves.

None of this would land without Moooi’s oldest habit, which the brand still describes as an ambition to stop the boring business. That mantra showed up loudly at the brand’s 25th anniversary installation in Milan this year, a mirrored, multi sensory environment built at Superstudio Più with choreographer Yoann Bourgeois, layering light, movement and scent into something meant to be felt rather than simply viewed. Marcel Wanders has said there’s no one who walks through a Moooi installation feeling nothing, and that stubborn refusal to be neutral is the connective tissue between a 2001 startup and a 2026 AI fragrance experiment.

Where this goes next is of more consequence than where it started. Moooi has been clear that technology should function as another creative material, sitting alongside craft and color rather than steering the whole show. If The Living Room concept ever leaves the realm of installation and lands inside actual homes, it will be a genuinely different pitch than anything coming out of the smart home industry right now. Not a house that watches you. A house that keeps you company.

Yet the world of garment care has remained stubbornly analog and labor-intensive, still revolving around large tumble dryers and the manual work of an iron. The category has been waiting for a device that truly understands the constraints of modern living, particularly for those in small apartments or constantly on the move. That wait may be ending.

Foldryn presents a compelling vision for what the evolution of this category could look like. It is a portable self-ironing device that collapses the functions of a dryer, an iron, and a clothes steamer into one compact, travel-friendly unit. These MacOS-inspired flip flops are weird, playful, and sadly don’t come with Apple “Find My”

The mind of David Delahunty is something no LLM can capture. With the speed most marketing teams would be envious of, David churns out idea after idea on his Instagram, turning brands and visual icons into fun products that creatively challenge how you look at logos, shapes, and designs. We’ve covered a bunch before, including an MS Paint-inspired makeup kit, along with this Finder icon-inspired backpack. A recurring theme in Delahunty’s collection, the Finder icon ‘finds’ itself in a new avatar this time – interlocking flipflops.

A lot of his designs lean on heavy visual puns, which make for great eye-candy on Instagram, but on rare occasions they make for great products too! Delahunty’s made MacOS Finder-inspired necklaces (which you can still buy, btw), and it’s about time that these flipflops enter the production hall of fame too. They’re fairly uncomplicated, molded as a single-piece polyurethane flip-flop, with left and right units being blue and white respectively. And no, a Latina mother throwing these at a misbehaving child wouldn’t classify as ‘Airdrop’.

When Bill Hernandez and Steve Jobs designed the original Finder icon, I doubt they realized what meme material it possessed. The icon is innately memorable, but it’s also easily reproducible as different products – Delahunty’s flipflops are a great example. The icon is split into two, making it perfect to turn into flipflops, although that weird jagged central cut is a sort of unique challenge when it comes to wearability. However, with a fair amount of planning, it’s easy to account for the fact that the flipflops aren’t entirely bilaterally symmetrical. I guess that’s the beauty about them.

Each shoe is made the same way Crocs are – molded as a single piece with no interlocking, stitching, or gluing of extra parts. This makes each flipflop incredibly strong, fairly comfortable, and long-lasting. The flipflops in question come with cutouts that depict the Finder icon’s face too, which I think is a great idea because they serve as ventilation, so your footwear doesn’t smell like death because the polyurethane isn’t particularly breathable. The cutouts are great for airing the footwear out after a day at the beach too, although try not to get sand into them through the cuts – it’s no fun dealing with gritty shoes rubbing against your feet like literal sandpaper.

Delahunty’s mind works much faster than most people’s hands, so a lot of his ideas get mocked up using AI (it’s honestly one of the best examples of AI enhancing someone’s workflow). That being said, a lot of tweaking needs to be done before these shoes hit production. The Most Iconic Moment in American Railroad History Is Now a LEGO Set (Sort Of)

On May 10, 1869, a photographer named Andrew J. Russell set up his camera at Promontory Summit, Utah, and captured one of the most reproduced images in American history. Two locomotives facing each other, nose to nose, with a crowd of workers and dignitaries packed between them, bottles raised, hammers in hand. The image became shorthand for an entire era: the moment a nation stitched itself together with 1,776 miles of iron rail.

This LEGO VHS Player Actually Has Cassettes You Can Insert and Remove

Before streaming queues and binge-watching algorithms rewired how we consume film and television, there was a ritual. You drove to the video store, walked the aisles, made your pick, and came home to slide that chunky black cassette into a slot that swallowed it with a satisfying mechanical thunk. The VCR wasn’t just a piece of consumer electronics. It was the centerpiece of a whole cultural ceremony, the thing that turned an ordinary Tuesday night into a genuine event. Polar-Angel_UA, a LEGO builder and 10K Club Member from Ukraine, has captured exactly that feeling in brick form with the Video Home System.

The build recreates a classic VHS setup with the kind of specificity that only someone who actually lived through the era could pull off. Waymo’s Self-Driving Car Saw the Flood and Drove In Anyway. Here’s The Problem Plaguing Every Robotaxi.

Every sensor on a Waymo robotaxi sees the world in layers. The LiDAR maps it in three dimensions, radar bounces through it, and cameras read it in color and contrast, building a composite picture of the road that no human retina could match at the same fidelity. So when a Waymo encountered a flooded section of a 40 mph road in San Antonio on April 20, the car absolutely saw the water. It slowed down for it. Then it drove in anyway, floated off the road surface, and came to rest in Salado Creek. The voluntary recall Waymo filed with NHTSA on April 30, covering 3,791 vehicles, was triggered not by a sensor that missed a hazard, but by a software stack that saw the hazard clearly and still chose the wrong response.

You might be sitting in one of those 3,791 recalled vehicles right now, somewhere in Phoenix, Los Angeles, Austin, or Atlanta, and Waymo has confirmed the permanent software fix is still in development. Tesla’s Cybercab, entering production at Giga Texas, runs a supervised robotaxi service in Austin, Dallas, and Houston on a pure-vision architecture with no LiDAR whatsoever. Uber’s platform in Dallas is dispatching Avride-operated Hyundai Ioniq 5s that are currently under NHTSA investigation for 16 crashes involving lane changes and failure to stop for traffic ahead. Amazon’s Zoox uses cameras, LiDAR, radar, and long-wave infrared on every vehicle, the most sensor-redundant consumer-facing stack in the industry, and is still in limited city testing. Each platform has a different answer to what a self-driving car should do when it encounters something it cannot traverse, and after the San Antonio creek, all of those answers deserve a much closer look.

The NHTSA recall notice characterizes the flaw precisely: the software “may allow the vehicle to slow and then drive into standing water on higher speed roadways.” That is a classification error buried in the decision stack, not a sensor failure, and the distinction matters more than the recall number suggests. Waymo’s 5th-gen Jaguar I-Pace and 6th-gen Zeekr RT both carry LiDAR, radar, and cameras in overlapping fields of view, and the San Antonio car processed the flooded road accurately as a hazard worth responding to. The decision architecture, however, had no hard-stop condition for water on a 40 mph road, only a caution flag that reduced speed and left proceeding as an available output. A separate Waymo had already been stranded near McCullough Avenue in San Antonio roughly two weeks before the April 20 incident, confirming this was a repeatable failure mode across a fleet that was still carrying passengers in nine other cities.

Tesla’s Cybercab carries no LiDAR, putting its supervised fleet in Austin, Dallas, and Houston in a fundamentally different position when floodwater appears than Waymo’s overlapping sensor stack would. The platform relies on eight cameras and 4D millimeter-wave radar, meaning no independent depth-sensing channel exists to assess water severity when camera visibility degrades in heavy rain. A real-world FSD 14.3.1 test in April 2026 ended in manual takeover when the front bumper camera submerged, a precise illustration of where the vision-only approach runs out of information. Avride, dispatching Hyundai Ioniq 5s through Uber’s Dallas app since December, is under concurrent NHTSA investigation for 16 crashes involving lane changes and failures to stop for road hazards, all 16 occurring with a trained safety monitor seated in the vehicle. The Waymo recall, the Avride probe, and a dashcam video of a Waymo rolling through a red light on Irving Boulevard in Dallas all surfaced in the same seven-day window, collectively mapping the same design gap across three platforms: a perception-to-action pipeline that detects a hazard but generates the wrong response to it. Waymo’s OTA patch is deploying now, but the permanent fix remains in development, meaning every current ride runs on interim constraints rather than a finished solution. The San Antonio incident involved an empty car, and that is the only reason this story ends with a recovery operation rather than a casualty report. Each platform carrying passengers today is still writing its edge-case rulebook, publishing each new chapter only after something breaks on a live road. Knowing which system you are riding in, what its sensor stack can assess in a sudden storm, and whether its flood-detection logic has been patched from an interim fix to an actual solution is, I’d argue, the most practical safety question a passenger can ask in 2026.

Sony’s PS6 Could Triple the PS5’s Power. It Could Also Cost $800 and Land in 2029

Seven years is a strange unit of time. Long enough to finish a PhD, short enough to remember an event vividly, and apparently, exactly long enough for Sony to build, test, manufacture, and ship a new generation of PlayStation hardware. PS3 to PS4, PS4 to PS5: seven years, twice, with the precision of a Swiss movement. The console industry built its entire release calendar ecosystem around that cadence. Publishers scheduled their biggest titles around it. Retailers planned inventory cycles for it. Analysts forecast revenue curves based on it. So the news that Sony has not yet decided when the PS6 will launch, with Bloomberg and MST International both pointing toward 2028 at the earliest (if not 2029), carries weight well beyond a single product launch.

The culprit is DDR7 memory, or more precisely, the catastrophic shortage of it, as AI data centers absorb the global supply of high-bandwidth RAM faster than Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron can produce it. One year of delay sounds manageable until you zoom out. GTA6, announced in December 2023 for a 2025 launch, has been publicly delayed three separate times and is currently targeting November 2026, with bettors still skeptical. The memory crisis at the root of Sony’s problem is unlike previous supply chain disruptions in one important way: it is being driven by a competitor class that simply outclasses consumer electronics on every financial dimension. Leakers and supply chain sources indicate Sony awarded the PS6 chip contract to AMD back in 2022, with the console expected to feature a custom Zen 6 CPU and RDNA 5 GPU architecture, targeting roughly triple the PS5’s rasterization performance with 4K gaming at 120 frames per second and advanced ray tracing. A companion handheld codenamed Project Canis is reportedly riding alongside the main console as part of a unified two-device platform strategy, which would represent the most significant structural shift in PlayStation’s hardware philosophy since the PS3’s disastrous Cell processor gamble. The specs, in other words, are not the problem. The atoms are.

The delay also arrives at a peculiar competitive moment. If supply chains stabilize by 2027, Sony could target a late 2028 launch with multiple SKUs and the handheld companion. And Apple, the company that arguably invented the modern product launch as cultural event, is now formally splitting its iPhone releases across a fall premium window and a spring standard window, with Mark Gurman reporting the expectation that this pattern continues for years to come. Clockwork, everywhere, is slipping.

Sony will ship the PS6. The hardware is real, the AMD partnership is locked, and the performance targets are serious enough to make the wait feel justified when the box finally lands on a shelf. But the seven-year cycle, that beautiful, reliable, industry-organizing drumbeat, is not coming back on its original terms. The PS6 will arrive when the memory market allows it, which is to say when AI infrastructure spending pauses long enough for consumer electronics to get a turn. That is a sentence that would have read like science fiction in 2020, when the PS5 launched on schedule into a pandemic and sold out globally within minutes. The world has reorganized itself around different priorities. The PlayStation, for the first time in a long time, has to wait in line like everyone else.

Nocturne’s Free App Turns Your Bricked Spotify Car Thing Into Something Better Than the Original

The open-source community has a long history of doing more with abandoned hardware than the original manufacturers ever did. The PSP got emulators Sony never approved. The Wii got homebrew loaders that ran software Nintendo pretended didn’t exist. The pattern repeats because the hardware is always fine; it’s the corporate support structure around it that evaporates. The Spotify Car Thing joined that lineage in December 2024 when Spotify killed server-side authentication and turned every unit into an expensive knob with a screen attached.

Nocturne picked up where Spotify dropped off. The project launched in October 2024, anticipating the shutdown, and has shipped four major versions since. V4.0.0, currently in beta with a public release imminent, finally delivers true Bluetooth connectivity without phone tethering, a companion app, and a feature set that makes the original Spotify firmware look like a rough draft.

V3 replaced that with Bluetooth tethering through your phone’s hotspot. V4 cuts the tether entirely, pairing directly via Bluetooth through the new Nocturne Companion app, which requires a Nocturne+ subscription to fund the team’s continued development.

What the photos make immediately clear is how clean the UI actually looks in practice. The now-playing screen pulls album art and renders it as a full bleed gradient background, the same visual logic Spotify used but executed with noticeably more polish in edge cases. The typography is large and glanceable. The playlist browser view is dense but organized, using album thumbnails and track titles in a layout that navigates naturally with the knob. The V4 architecture also bakes in full offline functionality, meaning the firmware survives without Spotify’s servers being cooperative, which was precisely the failure mode that bricked every original unit in the first place.

DIY Raspberry Pi Camera Turns Your Photos into Glitch Art, and the Results Are Incredible

You currently have two options if you want to apply effects and filters to your photos: use an app that will inevitably harvest your data for training their AI model (we’re watching you, Instagram), or actually edit your photos manually, which requires time, software subscriptions, and the patience of a saint. Reddit user sharkbiscuit101 unlocked a third option, and it involves a Raspberry Pi 4, a rotary encoder, a gamepad, and a frankly unreasonable amount of ingenuity. The build produces glitch photography on the pixel level, in real time, through a custom script running entirely offline on hardware you can source yourself. No cloud upload, no terms of service, and crucially, no algorithm deciding what your creative output should look like. This is your camera, running your parameters, answering to nobody.

The camera itself works exactly how you’d want a dedicated glitch tool to work. In Indoor Smoker Mode, enclosed heating circulates warmth evenly to a maximum of 230°C (446°F), mimicking a full oven capable of pizza, casseroles, and slow-roasted steaks, and pairs with the Flavor Module for authentic smoked dishes like tender beef brisket. Fast Grill Mode hits a maximum of 270°C (518°F), where the semi-open lid concentrates heat for rapid grilling and juice-locking, delivering steakhouse-quality flavor in minutes, ideal for weeknight meals when time is short but standards aren’t. Flat Grill Mode opens to 180 degrees, creating two independent heating zones, so you can grill steaks on one side at high heat while roasting vegetables on the other, with no batch cooking and no waiting, which makes it particularly suited to dinner parties. Two heat zones running independently in a single countertop footprint is the kind of practical design decision that sounds obvious in retrospect but rarely makes it into a consumer appliance.

LUMO’s most compelling trick may be how seriously it treats flavor, because this is one of the more thoughtful attempts yet at bringing authentic charcoal-style cooking indoors. Plenty of indoor grills promise grill marks, very few deal convincingly with the taste itself. Fighter pilots have had heads-up displays since the 1950s, because asking a human to look down at instruments while traveling at 600 miles per hour and making life-or-death decisions is an engineering failure, not a pilot failure. The technology migrated to production cars in 1988 when GM offered the first automotive HUD in the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, and every generation of premium vehicle design since has treated it as table stakes. Tesla rewrote so many conventions of the automobile that it’s easy to forget it left one important capability behind. For all the innovation packed into the Model 3 and Model Y, their dashboards direct critical driving data to a screen mounted nowhere near where human eyes naturally rest during forward motion. TrantorVision built NeuroHUD to close that gap, and the Kickstarter campaign funded in 30 minutes.

A pair of 150-degree AI fisheye cameras face Tesla’s display and read high-frequency data like speed at 50 Hz, fast enough to keep the HUD readout synchronized with the car’s actual state without perceptible lag at any velocity. Lower-frequency information, covering gear position, battery range, and navigation turns, arrives through the Tesla API on a separate channel, and the system routes each data type through the appropriate pipeline based on how quickly it needs to update. End-to-end latency on the AI vision side sits as low as 20 milliseconds, tighter than many production-fitted HUDs achieve through direct hardware integration. The onboard processor is a 6-core Arm DynamIQ chip paired with an Arm Mali G610 MP4 GPU and 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, running Ubuntu Core Linux with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity. That compute specification would look comfortable in a mid-range Android tablet, which gives a sense of how much processing headroom TrantorVision has reserved for future OTA feature additions.

At 1,500 nits of peak brightness, NeuroHUD’s 4-inch TFT LCD panel is engineered specifically around the failure mode that sinks most aftermarket HUDs in real-world use: direct sunlight washout. The panel runs at 480×800 resolution with a 140-degree viewing angle, keeping displayed information legible across a wide range of driver head positions without requiring precise alignment to a narrow sweet spot. The modular Light Engine gives drivers a genuine choice of projection method rather than committing them to a single approach. Combiner Mode positions a semi-transparent screen in the driver’s sightline for the sharpest image quality, with projected information appearing to float in the forward visual field at a focal distance that keeps eyes aimed naturally at the road. Windshield Projection Mode throws the image directly onto the glass for a more immersive overlay, and both modes switch without tools or any hardware intervention.

HomeControl is a GPS-triggered garage automation system that learns the driver’s RF remote signal, geolocates the home driveway, and fires the garage door automatically as the car turns in, with a physical button for manual override available at any time. Screen Mirroring turns the HUD into a secondary phone display, meaning Google Maps or Waze can be projected directly onto the combiner or windshield without any dependency on Tesla’s native navigation system. UI customization runs three levels deep: a mobile app for toggling individual elements, a full UI editor for precise sizing and positioning of each data element, and an open API interface for users who want to build a custom renderer entirely from scratch. A community layer lets drivers share layouts or download configurations built by other NeuroHUD owners worldwide, making the display experience as much a living software product as a hardware one. The combination of GPS automation, open API access, and a community-driven layout library gives NeuroHUD a software depth that compounds as its user base grows.

TrantorVision began the project in January 2025 with the goal of building a heads-up display designed around Tesla’s unique display architecture from the ground up. By May 2025 an engineering prototype was assembled and the AI vision system validated through real-world road testing; by July the product was publicly announced with a community already exceeding 4,000 Tesla owners across multiple platforms. Production design locked in December 2025, with the first batch of production samples arriving in January 2026. The device supports Model 3 from 2017 to 2023, Model Y from 2020 to 2025, Model 3 Highland from 2023 onward, Model Y Juniper from 2025 onward, and the Cybertruck from 2023 onward, covering both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive configurations with Model 3/Y Standard trim included. An OTA Compatibility Upgrade Service is built in, meaning the hardware is designed to receive future software capabilities without requiring a new unit.
